Past simple with Regular Verbs.
To make the past simple tense, we have to change the infinitive form of the verb. With
regular verbs, this is very easy. We simply add the ending '-ed'.

Verb + ed
There are some exceptions to this rule. Some regular verbs have
a slightly different spelling past simple tense.

1. If a verb ends in the letter `e', we do not add an extra `e' when we make the past simple.

◦ Live -> I lived Like -> They liked

2. If a verb ends in a consonant and then the letter 'y', we change 'y' to 'i' before we add the '-ed'
ending.

◦ Study -> He studied Marry -> She married

3. However, if a verb ends in a vowel and then the letter 'y', we do not change 'y' to 'i’.

◦ Play -> You played Enjoy -> We enjoyed

4. If the verb has one syllable, and finishes in one vowel and one consonant, we double the final
consonant.

◦ Stop -> It stopped Knit -> I knitted

5. Finally, in British English, verbs that end in the letter 'I' change to a double 'I' in past simple
tense. In American English, the letter 'I' does not usually become a double 'I’.

◦ Travel -> We travelled (UK English) We traveled (US English)
