CRICKET

COACHING
EXPERIENCE
By Vikrant Krishnakumar
Cricket is a great sport to play and master. Cricket is a nice sport since both women and men can play. Cricket
is a very popular sport. Cricket is played with a bat, ball and wickets. It was invented in the 17 th centaury in
England. There are two teams one batting and other bowling. The bowling sides aim is to prevent the batting
team from scoring runs and getting them out. The goal of the batting team is to score as many runs as possible
before all players get out. There are 3 types of cricket : Test, ODI and T20.1 over is 6 balls. Test has
unlimited overs so a team wins with highest amount of runs. ODI stands for one day international. In this
there are 50 overs. A team wins by scoring the most runs in the over.(It is possible a team hits 125 all out in
40 over and the other team hits 126/6 in 50 overs. Still team 2 wins by 1 run.) This is same to T20 but there
are only 20 overs. Test is the toughest amongst all because it takes time and matters how you save
energy and score. A player can get out by the following ways: Catch, run-out, LBW and bowled.
If the ball goes out of the pitch(boundary line) without touching, the batting side gets 6 runs. If it touches the
ground and then crosses it is 4 runs. 1,2,3 runs are scored by running between the wickets.
lets learn the fundamentals of cricket that I learned
Stance, grip, neutral, back lift ,drill!
1. Stance
Stance is the way you position your legs.
2. Grip
Grip is how I hold my bat.
3. Neutral
Neutral is the double tap.
4. Back lift
How you are ready to play the shot.
5. Drill
Play the shot!
Lets move on to types of shots I have learned!
Shot #1- Forward defense
When we are nervous to hit a shot, we defend the ball by placing the bat in a
position where it blocks it from hitting the stumps.
When should I use it? Fig#1
How should I do it?
Slightly tilt your bat and move your
Front leg ahead as in fig#2&3
In cricket we usually play this shot Fig#2

in test cricket
Fig #1
Forward defense video
Straight Drive, Cover drive
They both are the same, except that we hit straight in straight drive while we hit towards
the right for cover drive for right hander and vise versa for left handers.
What are they?
Like the forward defence, if we are confident to hit we hit these drives. If the ball comes
to the right of the stumps(a little) hit a cover drive if confident. If it comes straight to the
centre we hit a straight drive. Cover drive
How to play? Refer fig 1&2
Move the front leg to the right for cover and straight for straight drive. Like a pendulum
swing your bat hit the shot and refer fig 1&2 for the ending position
