INTRODUCTION

Child marriage refers to a marriage where at least one of the parties involved is
under the age of 18. It is a harmful practice that violates the rights of children
and can have negative impacts on their health, education, and overall
development.
OBJECTIVES

1. To study the economic factors that are the keys to child marriage in reference to socio cultural
practices.

2. To examine the impacts of child marriage on child birth.

3. To study the relevance of child marriage in present social scenario.


METHODOLOGY

1. RESEARCH DESIGN:

• The student researcher used Quantitative research design to achieve the objectives of the study.

• In this study, Descriptive and explanatory research approaches were used

2. SAMPLE DESIGN:

• The student researcher has selected Convenient Sampling Design from non-probability sampling.
3. METHODS AND TOOLS OF DATA COLLECTION:

• While collecting data, there are mainly two types of data commonly used in research practices.

• They are primary and secondary data.

• For this Research, primary methods of data collection were used. With the involvement of Interview,
Questionnaire as the primary method of data collection.
5. DATA ANALYSIS

• Data analysis is a process of obtaining raw data and converting it into information useful for decision-
making users.

• The student researcher used questionnaire, Ms Excel, Google forms for analyzing the data collected.

• The results are presented through different forms of Tables, Pie charts.

• Data analysis is followed by interpretation wherein interpretation is the process of making sense of
numerical data that has been collected, analyzed, and presented.

• It is the process of assigning meaning to the collected information and determining the conclusion,
significance and implication of the findings.

6. LOCATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted at Sivasagar, Jorhat and


Guwahati.
FINDINGS:

• Almost 60%of the respondents belong to the age group of 15 to 18 when they married . Almost 40%
of the respondents belong to the age group 13 to 15 when they married.

• Almost 60% of the respondents were aware of acts related to child marriage’s and almost 40% of the
respondents were unaware of any acts related to child marriage’s.

• Figure 2:
• Almost 30% of the respondents married early due to traditional practices. Almost 20% of the
respondents married early due to poverty. Almost 20% of the respondents married due to lack of
awareness. Almost 30% of the respondents refused to answer.

• Figure 3:
• Almost 70% of the respondents said that marrying before 18 have both positive and negative
consequences. Almost 20% of the respondents said that marrying before 18 have negative
consequences. Almost 10% of the respondents said that marrying before 18 have neither positive
neither negative consequences.

• Almost 40% of the respondents said that some girls in their community are still married before 18.
Almost 30% respondent said that few girls under 18 are still married before 18. Almost 20% of the
respondents said that no girl under the age 18 are married in their community. Almost 10% of the
respondents said that most of the girls under the age 18 are married in their community.

• Almost 80% of the respondents said that girls getting married before 18 has decreased in their
community since the last few years. Almost 20% of the respondents said that girls getting married
before the age of 18 has remain same in their community.

DISCUSSION

1. Maximum number of the respondent belonging to the age group of 30 to 40 years, majority of them
belonging to female group showcase that they were being married of between the age of 15 to 18
years old due to traditional practices, being the main reason followed by poverty, lack of education
and lack of awareness.
2. The study also put light on how almost 60% of respondent were aware of Acts related to child
marriage, but at the same time 40% of the respondents were not aware of any act or law related to
child marriage.
3. The study shows that 70% of the respondents supported the idea of marrying before the age of 18
years on having both positive and negative consequences. Whereas 20% of the respondents were against
marrying before the age of 18 years and the rest 10% of the respondents said that marrying before 18
years have neither positive nor negative consequences.
4. The study showcase that social awareness and adequate access of education has gradually aware the
community against ill effects of child marriage, mean while the rest who are falls into illiterate group still
support marriage of children before 18 years, despite the laws and acts enacted by the government to
prevent it.

5. During the study, the student researcher able to find out that almost all the respondents did not face
any difficulties during child birth and no abnormalities has been observed in their off spring.
CONCLUSION

Child marriage is a harmful practice that violates the basic rights of children, particularly
girls, and has negative consequences for their physical, psychological, and social well-
being. To end child marriage, a sustained and coordinated effort involving all stakeholders,
including governments, civil society, religious and community leaders, and individuals, is
required. Education and awareness-raising initiatives are essential to change social norms
and attitudes. Gender equality promotion, challenging harmful practices, and empowering
girls and women is necessary to create a world where child marriage is no longer accepted.
Governments must implement and enforce laws that prohibit child marriage and provide
support to families and communities to prevent it from occurring.
