DIFFERENT BREEDS OF CHICKEN
Basis of Classifications
1. Egg type / layers– White Leghorn
and Cantonese
- they are active, medium size and
neat in appearance which make them
good layers.
2. MEAT OR BROILER TYPE

Wyandotte – these are the breed belongs to
dual purpose type. They are excellent egg
layers and have fine juicy meat.
SWINE BREED
The most popular meat eaten by Filipinos is
pork and considered the major source of
protein in the diet. Pork is palatable and
nutritious food. There are many imported
breeds of swine in the country today and it is
difficult to select and breed suited to the area.
THE LARD OR HAM TYPE
1. Landrace
The sow are noted for their
excellent in mothering ability
and litter size.They are heavy
milkers and their piglets are
with superior rate of growth and
efficient in feed utilization.
2. HAMPSHIRE
They are long legged but
lack body thickness. It is
black in color with a white
belt around the shoulder
and the sows have a higher
percentage of weaning pigs
and can adapt to a rugged
condition.
3. DUROC JERSEY
The are prolific and are good
mothers. The head is small in
proportion to body. The Duroc color
is varying in shades of red. Thy have
higher performance under rugged
condition.
4. BERKSHIRE
They are black in color
with six white points in
their limbs, four int the
feet and some in the face
and tail.They have
desirable length but lack
growth.
THE BACON TYPE
1. Yorkshire
The sows are superior in their mothering
ability, farrow and wean large litter, and also
excellent milkers. The carcasses are fine
quality and comparable with those of other
breeds in growth rate and weight. They adopt
well to confinement but not in rugged
condition.
2. TAMWORTH
This is a docile pig but it is more active
than many many rare breed pigs and
requires strong fencing .Tamworth is
good breed for rooting and does well in
a woodland based system. Along legged
lean pig. Sows weigh around 260kg and
boas 320 kg.
3. NATIVE PIGS
Native Pigs are
prolific and can
adapt well to
rugged condition.
But their growth
rate is rather slow.
