Introduction

Science, Technology and Society ( STS ) is one of the

essential course in the new curriculum of General
Education Course ( GEC ) set by the Commission on
Higher Education ( CHED ) for tertiary level. It was
conceptualized to develop deep appreciation and critical
understanding of the role of science and technology
In the development of people and society.

It deals with interactions between science and

technology in social, cultural, political and economic
contexts. It is an interdisciplinary course whereby
students are engaged in learning myriad of scientific
issues and technological developments.
This unit is about the General Concepts and STS
Historical Development. This very important to begin
in studying General Education Course 7 which is
Science, Technology and Society (STS). It talks
about science as defined by different views and give
you understanding the difference between science
and philosophy of Science.

It will also explain further the importance of

understanding science that is incorporated or
contextualized to the society and environmental
problem and learned the importance of science as a
subject or as a course.

Features of STS
Science, Technology and Society ( STS ) is an interdisciplinary
field that studies the conditions under which the production,
distribution and utilization of scientific knowledge and
technological systems occur; the consequences of these
activities upon different groups of people. It simply aims to
increase our ability to comprehend and apply the concepts of
scientific knowledge and technological systems.

STS can be therefore defined as a discipline that raises a

generation of citizens who understand the nature of things
and environment; a generation of citizens who are aware of
changes taking place around them; a generation who can
adjust to the changes in the environment; a generation who
is equipped to deal with forces that influences the future, a
generation who can take her future on her own hands.
Features of STS

Science is a dynamic, so is technology and society. As science and technology,

the society is affected both positively and negatively. The society becomes complex in
accepting and using new technologies. But they are often as important as the intended
effects wherein the effects of technology are often Sociological that is a discipline that
embodies the relationship of science and technology and how thetwo shape the society
and STS can be subtle because the side effects are unnoticed
unless carefully studied. These may involve gradual changes in the behavior of individuals,
groups, institutions and even in the entire societies .
Features of STS

The invention of simple tools from the dawn of humankind has occurred with the synergistic
relationship of co-dependence, co-influence and co-production of technology and society
and continues into the invention of modern technologies. An extrordinary number of
examples of co-production that can be seen in our society today is the use of mobile phones.
The mobile phones has greatly influences the society and the way people live in their lives.
Nowadays, many people are accessible to talk to no matter where they are. As the populace
relies more and more on mobile phones, research led to developed additional features to
mobile phones such as the implementation to internet access the changes the way mobile
phones were used nowadays.
