OF THE
CYBER WORLD
Technology has been part of everyone’s life, be it
at home, in school, or anywhere with every faces
of our undertaking. However, many instances, we
may not be aware that we have been misusing or
abusing it or in another way around, we may find
ourselves being used by other people with their
malicious motives using digital tools.

What is Digital Citizenship?
- Citizenship in the digital world is defined as the qualities that a
person is expected to have a responsible member of the digital
community.

Such citizenship requires one to be digitally literate and to possess


certain specific capabilities necessary to survive productively in a
world diverse with cultures, media, print and non-print texts.

A digitally literate individual is he/she who possesses a range of digital


skills, knowledge of the basic principles and skills in using computer
network.
Any digital literate person (DLP) possesses
critical thinking and skills in understanding all
societal issues by digital technologies.

Expressed as Common Core Sate Standards,


Connolly and Giouroukakis (2016) summed up
the seven characteristics of a DLP.
The Seven
Characteristics of DLP
1. Demonstrate independence with text.

 They can independently, with little guidance


from teachers and peers, digital texts,
communicate and build on others' ideas, and
understand and apply academic and discipline
to vocabulary and conventions of English.
2. Builds strong content knowledge.

 They acquire and share knowledge of subject


matter through reading, writing, and speaking
as well as research and study.

3. Responds to varying demands for
audience, task, purpose, and discipline.

 They understand how words affect meaning in


writing and in speech, depending on the
audience and the purpose , and how different
disciplines provide different types of evidence.
4. Comprehends as well as critique.

 They understand and explain what the writers,


speakers, and media creators are saying
through their texts, and they also know how to
analyze and examine the texts critically.
5. Values evidence.

 They can cite evidence to support their


interpretation of text, both verbally and in
writing
6. Uses technology and digital media
strategically and capably.

 They synthesize information found through


various media and technologies.
 They employ technology thoughtfully and
effectively and determine which media are best
suited for their communication goals.

and cultures.

 They encounter perspective and ways of life


that are different from their own through
reading, writing, and listening, and they can
communicate effectively with peers of diverse
backgrounds.
Cyber Citizenship
- Citizenship is an old value that is now applied to
a new medium, the internet.

- Cyber citizenship refers to being responsible


when using the internet. Doing online when no
one is looking speaks a lot about one’s character
and morals.

1. Be careful and critical for whatever you post


online that could be visible to the public even if
on a private page through tagging via friend.

2. If you have a problem with someone go to that


person or an adult to help work it out, instead of
posting your expression online.

3. Use the internet to help you with your


schoolwork, but you give credit to the sources you
use and critically analyze everything you search
online.

research relevant and needed data or information
and to stay connected with friends throughout the

share it or use it in a project and check on accuracy
and truth in the information you search on the

10. Use only the computers that you are allowed

IMPORTANCE OF CYBER CITIZENSHIP
1. It keeps the internet free from hurtful statements.
2. It creates a culture of more reliable information.
3. It keeps provisions for people to be given credit for
what they have created.
4. More criminals or bullies can be caught when kids
are honest and talk to adults.
5. It keeps information private.
