Module 5

Media and Cyber or Digital Literacies

Media literacy can thus be defined as “the ability to identify different types of media and
understand the messages they are communicating” (Common Sense Media, n.d.). The exact type
of media varies—television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, hand-outs, flyers, etc.—but
what they all have in common is that they were all created by someone, and that someone had a
reason for creating them.

PRETEST

DIRECTIONS: Read each statement carefully and identify if it is True or False.

TRUE 1. Media messages are constructed.

TRUE 2. Media messages are produced within economic, social, political, historical, and
aesthetic contexts.

TRUE 3. The interpretative meaning-making processes involved in message reception consist of

an interaction between the reader, the text, and the culture.

FALSE 4. Media literacy simply means knowing what and what not to watch; it does mean
“watch carefully, think critically”

FALSE 5. Criticizing the media is media literacy. However, being media literate sometimes
requires that one indeed criticize what one sees and hears.
POST TEST

Directions: Use the following questions to evaluate your understanding of the concepts,
principles, and ideas in the chapter. Write your answers in the space provided.

1. Explain to a classmate how Media Literacy and Digital Literacy are related?
• Information literacy has typically been associated with research skills. Media literacy
typically has been associated with critical analysis of news, advertising, and mass media
entertainment. Digital literacy is associated with the ability to use computers, social
media, and the Internet.

2. Explain how critical thinking is important to both Media and Digital Literacy?
• It is very important for a person to be skilled in using critical thinking which can be
used in Media or Digital Literacy. Fake news is now spread on social media, it also
causes people to be confused as to what is true and what is false. That's why our mind
should be sharp in using the modern methods of discovering knowledge that are currently
happening in our world.

3. If your principal asked you to insert Media Literacy into your subject, and you could only
accommodate three skills/competencies, which competencies would you aim for? On
what basis would you choose the three and exclude the others?
•. In today's time when we live in modern technology, our knowledge of its use should be
extensive, If I will be given a chance to teach those matters in my students, I would
choose reading and understanding digital and non-digital format, creating and
communicating digital information and media literacy. It is because it will give me a
chance to use these tools to their advantage. It also gives students a learning environment
where they can practice applying them in educational setting. Communication is also a
key aspect of digital literacy. When communicating in virtual environments, the ability to
clearly express their ideas, ask relevant questions, maintain respect, and build trust is just
as important as when communicating in person.
4. If you had to create a report on Boyle’s Law, can you create a plan for locating and
accessing the information you need? How would you ensure that you actually understand
the information you find?

• If I had to create a report on Boyle’s Law, I will apply my knowledge of cultural

literacy is able to create a plan and give the information that I’ve known about that topic.
After that, I will get some information by creating infographics, charts, or photos that can
find on the internet or digital platforms.

5. Can you explain why an email from a woman in an abusive relationship promising you
100,000 US dollars in exchange for your help is likely to be a scam? Can you explain
how an advertisement on social media from an unknown company promising you a
chance to win a brand new, top-of-the-line smartphone is also likely to be a scam?

• First of all, if I don’t know that woman I will not entertain or response to her e-mail and
messages. I’ve been there before to fall victim to a scam and I don’t want that to happen
again. I’m type of person where there’s someone needs my help, I’m always here to help
as much as I can even if there’s nothing in return.
• Based on my experience, I’m able to identify if that advertisement is fake if they’re
using click bait. Most of the time in an advertisement, there’s a pop-up message that you
need to click and they want to get your personal information especially mobile number,
email address and bank account. That’s why we need to be more observant and don’t give
any personal information in social media, and I’m always think before I click.
