Tutorial Week 6

1. Practice using Excel to solve the Triangle problem in the Lecture.

2. Solving a plane stress problem (Triangle elements) using Matlab
3. Practice to solve above Questions using ANSYS (Homework-from Week
8 onwards)
Lab 6 – Question 1: Calculate displacements and stresses for plate subjected to plane stress
(Triangle Element):
A steel plate subjects to tension forces as shown in Figure below.
Dimensions: 100mm x 400mm, Thickness, t = 10 mm; Applied load: p = 200 N/mm. Given, Young’s
modulus: E = 200 GPa; Poisson ratio,  = 0,3.
Determine displacement and stresses in the plate.

100 mm

400 mm

Discretise the plate into nodes and

elements

Homework

Determine the deflection at the point of load application using a one

element model. The plate has a thickness t=10 mm

If a mesh of several triangular elements is used, comment on the stress

values in the elements close to the tip. (Recommend to use Matlab or
Ansys to perform calculation)
