MAE 3610 Homework 4

• Problem 4.1
Explain the difference between a stress concentration factor and a (mode I) stress intensity factor. Give their
units. Use an equation for each factor to show how it is calculated

• Problem 4.2
Find the 2 materials in CES Edupack (Level 3) that can have the largest mode I critical crack size, assuming
Y=1. Give a short explanation of what happens when a growing crack reaches the critical crack length.
Include your plot.

• Problem 4.3
A plate contains an elliptical hole with a length of 80mm and a minimum radius of 1mm, see diagram. The
plate itself is 800mm wide and 10mm thick. It carries a mode I tensile load of 55kN.
It is made of a material with a yield strength of 60MPa.

a) Give the nominal stress

b) What is the maximum stress in the plate, taking the hole into account?

(a) The Paris’ law for the growth rate of a pre-existing crack during cyclic loading is given as:

where is the stress intensity at the crack tip, and m>2 is an exponent. Use this expression to express
the number of cycles to failure Nf of a component cycled through a uniform stress range , that contained
an initial crack length ci until a critical crack length c*.

(b) A die (hollow) fabricated from a low alloy steel must withstand tensile hoop stresses that cycle between
0 and 400 MPa. Prior to use it has been determined that the length of the largest crack in the steel is
1mm. Determine the minimum number of times that the die may be used before fialing by fatigue,
assuming m = 4, A = 1.0x10-12 (with in MPa), and Y = 1.12. The fracture toughness of the steel is 160
MPa.m1/2

all of you work and reasoning. Answer on a new slide.
a) Explain what the endurance limit is and indicate it on the figure below (you can use tools in PowerPoint)
b) If cycled with a maximum stress of 1100 MPa for 1000 cycles, and a mean stress of zero, will the
material fail? Indicate it on the plot
c) If cycled at an amplitude stress of 700 MPa for 100,000 cycles, with a mean stress of zero, will the
material fail?
d) If cycled at an amplitude stress of 650 MPa for 100,000 cycles, with a mean stress of 400 MPa, will the
material fail?
