Aquaculture

The rearing of aquatic animals or the

cultivation of aquatic plants for food.
What is aquaculture?
• Aquaculture is the farming of marine and freshwater finfish,
shellfish, aquatic plants, algae and other organisms.
• It involves producing aquatic organisms under deliberate and
controlled conditions, as opposed to extracting them or their outputs
from the wild.
• While typically performed for food production, aquatic organisms
can also be farmed for use in aquaponics systems, to restore
threatened species, enhance valuable wild species or to produce non-
food items like pearls, biofuel and bioplastics.
What is aquaculture?
• In Western Australia, commercial aquaculture produces many
different species including yellowtail kingfish, barramundi, abalone,
mussels, marron, silver perch, rainbow trout, yabbies and oysters.
Emerging sectors with capacity for growth in WA include coral, kelp,
seaweed and artemia production.

Aquaculture Cage-Draw your design in pairs
○ Think about:
● Sea state, can it withstand a storm or large swell
● Where it is located, on shore or offshore?
● How big is the cage, what’s it made from and how does it maintain shape
● Species
● Growth rate
● How many individuals per cage
● Predators
● Accessibility for workers
● Workers and scientist's tasks
● How to see/know how much food has been wasted
● Do you need to have the cage in a high or low flow area, why?
