Fish Cultivation

Objectives:

ideas about fish
cultivation and
b. Identify the different
methods of fish
cultivation .
What is Fish Cultivation/Farming?
 It means raising fish commercially in
tanks, ponds ,and cages.
Benefits:
 Fish is a good source of protein.It is a good
substitute for animal meat, milk and
poultry.
 It is good source of income to fish farmers.
 It greatly contributes to the economic growth of
the country.
Having a proper fish cultivation
ensures good production.
Various methods of fish cultivation
are used in bodies of water in the
country. Among them are the
following:
 Fishpond method
 Fish Pen method
 Cage method
 Open-water method
Fishpond method
- refers to the raising of
fish in ponds.
The fish ranges from
fingerlings to
marketable sizes.
Fishpond method
-The pond must have either
fresh, brackish, or marine water.
The process of fish cultivation
consists of
preparation of the fishpond,
stocking of fish, fertilization,
weed control, and control of
pests and diseases.
Fish Pen method
Fish Pen method
Bamboos are used
as posts or braces for
pens.
Harvesting is done by
the use of nets and
fishing boats.
Cage method
-employed in inland bodies
of water. The cage is made
of bamboo or wood with
nylon netting. Scoop nets are
used for harvesting.
Open-water method
-is where fish are cultivated in
bays, coastal areas, and
lagoons.The production of
oysters,mussels, and seaweeds is
usually done in the open water.
Open-water method
- Oysters are produced
commercially with mussels
because they both thrive in
brackish, salty water. They exam
of both feed on microscopic
plants and animals, organic
particles, and bacteria in the
water.
