01
ENERGY
What is Energy?
Energy is that which is capable of producing a
change in matter.
It cannot be created nor destroyed and may be
transferred between objects and bodies.
Main Characteristics
The main characteristics of energy include the fact that is something you can:

Types of Energy
These properties are applicable to the various types of energy which exist.

Mechanical Chemical Eléctrical Solar

Nuclear Thermal Sound l
These energies can be obtained from renewable or non-renewable energy sources.
02
Renewable
What is
Renewable
energy?
Renewable energy is energy that is produced
from natural processes and continuously
replenished. A few examples of renewable
energy are sunlight, water, wind, tides,
geothermal heat, and biomass
Main Characteristics

1 2 3
They are inexhaustible These resources are Owing to their indigenous
resources. capable of regeneration nature, they help to
reduce our country’s
dependency on external
supplies
Types of renewable energy
The sources and types of renewable energy are mainly formed by :

Solar Hydraulic Sea energy

Eolic Biomass Geothermic

Advantages of renewable energy
It is safe, abundant, and clean to use when compared to fossil fuels.

Renewable energy sources can never run out because these sources are continuously
filled by nature

It is a technology instead of fuel.

Renewable sources require less maintenance as compared to non-renewable energy

sources. For instance, if you can see turbines in hydropower stations or in wind farms, you
will observe that these power-generating systems do not require any external system for
rotating parts. Although their initial cost is high, once they are installed, you can benefit
from them for a lifetime.
Disadvantages of renewable energy
Renewable Energy Is Not Available Round the Clock

The Efficiency of Renewable Technologies Is Low

The Initial Cost of Renewable Energy Is High

Renewable Energy Sites Require A Lot of Space

Impact of Climate Change On
RE
Renewable energy technologies totally depend on the weather (e.g., sun and wind)
to generate energy.

In case atmospheric conditions are not good enough, renewable energy

technologies would fail to generate any electricity.

Hydro generators require enough rain to fill dams for their supply
of flowing water.

Wind turbines require wind blowing, at least with minimum wind

speed, to move their blades.

Solar panels need clear skies and sunshine to get the heat required
to generate electricity; at night, it isn’t collected.
03
Non-
Renewable
What is
non-
renewable
energy
Non-renewable energy is energy sources that exist
in finite quantities and cannot be naturally
replenished or regenerated. These energy resources
are formed through natural processes, such as the
decomposition of organic matter or the nuclear
reactions occurring in the Earth’s core.
Main Characteristics

Types of renewable energy
The sources and types of non-renewable energy are mainly formed by :
:

Crude Oil Natural Fossil Nuclear

Gas Fuels Fuels
Disadvantages of non-
renewable energy
Non-renewable energy is finite in nature, once depleted, it cannot be
replenished.

The by-products generated from non-renewable energy production

contribute to environmental damage and an increase in greenhouse gas
emissions.

The transportation, mining, and extraction activities associated with non-

renewable energy sources can result in accidents such as oil spills, nuclear
meltdowns, pipeline leaks, and explosions, causing severe harm to the
environment.
Disadvantages of non-
renewable energy

Once exhausted they are not easily replenished

Responsible for acid rain

Its residual products are generally non-biodegradable

Non-biodegradable waste generation
