WHO IS JOSE RIZAL?
● José Rizal/José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda. (June 19,
1861 – December 30, 1896) was a Filipino nationalist, writer
and polymath active at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the
Philippines. He is considered the national hero of the Philippines.
Rizal became a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda
Movement, which advocated political reforms for the colony
under Spain.
RIZAL’S FAMILY TREE

• José Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, to Francisco Rizal Mercado y
Alejandro and Teodora Alonso Realonda y Quintos in the town
of Calamba in Laguna province.

• Jose Rizal family is considered as one of the biggest families during their time.
Domingo Lam-co, the family paternal ascendant was full blooded Chinese who
came to Philippines from Amoy, China in the closing years of 17th century and
married a half Chinese woman named Ines de la Rosa.

• Jose Rizal came from a 13-member family consisting of his parents, Francisco
Mercado II and Teodora Alonso Rizal, nine sister9s and only one brother.

• Rizal's family played a significant role in shaping his character. His parents
instilled in him the values of education, love for one's country, and social
responsibility. His mother, Teodora, especially had a profound impact on his life.
RIZAL’S CHILDHOOD

● During his childhood, Rizal witnessed the injustices and abuses


committed by Spanish colonial authorities and friars against the
Filipino people. These experiences would later inspire his activism
against colonial oppression.
● Throughout his life time, Jose Rizal was Influence by books which
made Rizal an avid reader and was also greatly influenced by the
works of European authors and philosophers. He was particularly
inspired by the writings of Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau in
which fuelled his desire for social reform and independence of his
fellow country man (Filipinos).
