HARTSFIELD–JACKSON ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Opening date 1926. located 11 km south of the central business district of Atlanta,
USA. It is the world's busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic and takeoffs and
landings. The airport is the main hub for Delta Air Lines, AirTran Airways, Shuttle
America. In 2007, Hartsfield-Jackson became the world's busiest passenger airport in
terms of passenger traffic (89.4 million passengers) and takeoffs and landings (994,346
operations). In 2017, passenger traffic reached 104 million people. No airport in the
world has yet managed to approach the 100 million passenger mark a year. Most of the
flights are domestic to various US airports, but this airport serves international flights
too, especially to North America, South America, Central America, Europe, Asia and
Africa. There are two terminals at the airport where passengers drop off and receive
baggage, the North Terminal and the South Terminal. The two terminals are part of one
large building. There are 5 runways, they all differ in length(2743-3800 meters long)
and one helipad.
Hong Kong International Airport
Opening date 6 July 1998. Location of Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong. The airport opened for
commercial use in 1998, replacing Hong Kong's old Kaitak Airport, and has become an
important regional freight transport hub, passenger hub and air gateway to mainland China, East
Asia and Southeast Asia. Despite its relatively short history, it has repeatedly won international
awards as the best airport in the world. The airport is operated by the Airport Authority Hong
Kong and operates 24 hours a day. The airport is the main hub for Cathay Pacific, Dragonair,
Hong Kong Airlines and others. 72.67 million passengers were served at Hong Kong
International Airport in 2017, making it the eighth in terms of passenger traffic and the third in
terms of the number of international passengers served among airports in the world. The airport
is also the first in the world in terms of the number of cargo flights handled, annually handling
more than 4 million tons of cargo. However, there are only 2 runways, which are 3800 meters
long and both of them are parallel. By the way, the airport is built mostly on an artificial island.
FRANKFURT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Opening date July 8, 1936. Location: Hesse, Germany(12 km (7.5 miles) southwest
of Frankfurt city center). It`s one of the largest airport in Germany, which area is
approximately 2300 hectares. Located in the fifth largest city in Germany and operated
by Fraport. In terms of the number of passengers (70 560 987 in 2019), it ranks ninth in
Europe. It ranks fifth in Europe in terms of freight traffic (2,076,734 tons in 2015). The
airport has 4 parallel runways. Three of them are 4000 meters long and one is 2800
meters. The airport has two large terminals and one small one for VIP. The terminals
are so large that airport staff use electric golf cars or bicycles to move around. As for
passengers, they can easily navigate the airport thanks to the numerous direction signs.
There are five rooms in total. By the way, Frankfurt am Main Airport was one of the
first airports to use an automatic baggage sorting system. The airport is a hub for many
well-known airlines such as Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, Ryanair.
AMSTERDAM AIRPORT SCHIPHOL
Opening date September 16, 1916. Location of Haarlemmermeer, Netherlands (located 17.5
km. southwest and 20 minutes from Amsterdam). Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is the main
airport in the Netherlands. In 2015, Schiphol served 58,284,864 passengers, which is 12th in
Europe. In 2013, 1,565,961 tons of cargo were transported through Schiphol, according to this
indicator, Schiphol was second only to the airports of Frankfurt am Main and Paris - Charles de
Gaulle in Europe. There are five main runways in Schiphol, and another runway serves small
aircraft flights. They are all approximately the same size 3000 meters long and parallel. There are
plans to build a seventh runway. The airport was built as one large terminal with large passenger
lounges, the last of which was completed in 1994. Further expansion of the terminal is planned.
Schiphol is the base airport for KLM, Martinair and Transavia and an important hub for Delta Air
Lines. The terminal territory is divided into three halls: 1, 2 and 3. All these halls are connected
by passages, from each hall there are piers with boarding gates. Schiphol Airport was voted the
Best Airport in Western Europe in 2020. Today the rating of the airport is 4 stars, only 9 airports
have such a rating.
