What is Discourse Analysis?

its social context , focusing on how language is used to
convey meanings and constructs social realities.

• Scholars like Michael Foucolt and Erving

Goffman are more closely associated with
the development of Discourse Analysis.
Who is Margaret Mead?
Margaret Mead (1901-1978) was an influential
American cultural anthropologist. She's best known for
her pioneering research on topics like adolescence,
gender roles, and cultural diversity.

Her work, including the famous book "Coming of Age in

Samoa," challenged Western assumptions about
cultural universals. Mead advocated for understanding
cultures without imposing judgments. Her contributions
continue to shape the field of anthropology.
• Margaret Mead was a prominent cultural anthropologist who conducted extensive
fieldwork and produced several influential works. Some of her important works include:
1. "Coming of Age in Samoa" (1928)
2. "Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies" (1935)
3. "Male and Female" (1949)
4. "Cultural Patterns and Technical Change" (1953)
5. "Continuities in Cultural Evolution" (1964)
6. "Blackberry Winter: My Earlier Years" (1972)
While Margaret Mead's primary contributions were in cultural anthropology, her work
does have some connections to the broader study of discourse and language use in
society. Here are a few indirect connections:

• 1. Cultural Relativism

• 2. Language and Culture

• 3. Role of Language in Constructing Realities
