Critical Listening
A good listener is the one who use caution in
evaluating the messages we hear, it means using
careful, systematic thinking and reasoning to see
whether a message makes sense in light
of factual evidence.
Listening Skills
Six ways to improve listening skills:

1. Recognize the difference between Facts and Opinions


Learning to separate opinions from facts, aware if whether
speaker is delivering a factual message or a message based on opinion.
2. Uncovering Assumptions
Gaps in a logical sequence that listeners passively fill with their own ideas
and opinions and may or may not be accurate.
3. Be open to new ideas
We must be open to new ideas, listen and evaluate the message.

Six ways to improve listening skills:

4. Rely on the Reason and Common Sense


Common sense tells you that the message is logical,
credible and coherent.
5. Relate New Ideas to Old Ones
As both speakers and listener one of the most important things you can do to
understand the message is to relate new ideas to previously held ideas.
6. Take Notes
Note taking is a skill that improves with practice.

NOISE
------ One of the biggest factors to interfere with listening…

1. Physical Noise
Items consist of various sounds in an environment.
2. Psychological Noise
Distractions to a speaker’s message caused by receiver’s internal thought.
3. Physiological Noise
Distractions to a speaker’s message caused by listener’s own body.
4. Semantic Noise
Receiver experience confusion over the meaning of sources or word choice.
