ClimateCare

Chatbot
Developing a chatbot using IBM Watson Assistant
tool to better connect those in lower-income
communities to resources and agencies that provide
services to people affected by climate change.

Project Background
▪ The world is in a climate emergency – “a code red for
humanity”.
▪ The world is far from securing a global temperature rise to
below 2°C as promised in the Paris Agreement.
▪ Globally, we emit around 50 billion metric tons of
greenhouse gases annually.
▪ Kenya contributes 0.05% percent of global CO2 emissions
annually.
▪ CO2 emissions of Kenya increased from 3.9 million tonnes in
1972 to 22.4 million tonnes in 2021 growing at an average
annual rate of 3.89% .
▪ Sustainable solutions exist but the ever-increasing rate of
CO2 emissions into the atmosphere is rapidly resulting into
climate change.

industrial processes, 1900-2022
Global Emissions by Gas
▪ Carbon dioxide (CO2): From fossil fuel use,
industries, burning vegetation, etc.
▪ Methane (CH4): From agricultural activities, waste
management, energy use, and biomass burning.
▪ Nitrous oxide (N2O): From agricultural activities
(fertilizer use) and fossil fuel combustion.
▪ Fluorinated gases (F-gases) which include
hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons
(PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6): From
industrial processes, refrigeration, and the use of
a variety of consumer products.
Problem Statement
▪ With the ever-increasing CO2 emissions droughts, floods and
landslides are expected to increase in Kenya.
▪ These hazards result in the displacement of communities,
disruption of livelihoods, and in extreme cases loss of lives and
property.
▪ Disasters such as floods and landslides often result to
emergency situations which require quick action.
▪ All these negative impacts are felt more severely by low-
income communities.
▪ Low-income communities depend on natural resources for
their survival.
▪ Low-income communities’ lives are at stake.
▪ They are only left at the mercy of humanitarian aid from
relevant agencies and well-wishers.

Solution
▪ Technology based solution using IBM Watson Assistant to create an AI powered chatbot.
▪ The chatbot known as “ClimateCare” will better connect low-income communities to
resources and agencies that provide services to people affected by climate change.
▪ Services and resources include: disaster relief and emergency services; climate adaptation
and resilience planning; and climate education and awareness.
21st Century Learning Skills

The project has integrated the 21st-

century learning skill of "Creativity"
and "Problem-Solving" by exploring
inspiration and identifying a real-world
problem that affects the low-income
communities in Kenya and devising an
innovative and sustainable solution i.e.,
ClimateCare ChatBot.
User Story
This is Fatma from North-Eastern
who says,

“Climate Care Chatbot is an

optimal technological solution
that will help people in my
community to easily connect with
humanitarian aid and also access
to climate change awareness and
education.”
Conclusion
• Climate change is one of the biggest challenges the world faces today.

• To address climate change, organizations must begin by understanding

their carbon dioxide emissions and then use that knowledge to inform
their actions to move swiftly towards net zero carbon emissions.

• Carbon dioxide emissions problem cannot be solved by any one person, or

community or country.

• But together, every person, every community, every country can be part
of the solution – and all of us will benefit from the change we make.
