The verb HAPPEN is a special case.


• We don’t need an auxiliary verb to ask a WH-
question in the past simple.
• As a regular verb, we simply add the ED suffix to
turn it into the past simple.

• What happenED in 1945?

Negatives

• To produce negative sentences in the past , we use the auxiliary verb


DID + a negative adverb NOT:

• The chocolate bar DID NOT melt in his hand. ( full form of the aux. verb in
the negative)

• Microwave ovens DID NOT become available until 1967. (full form of the aux. verb in

the negative)

• It DIDN’T melt. ( contracted form of the aux. verb in the


negative )

• They DIDN’T become available. ( contracted form of the aux. verb in the negative )

• * Notice that the main verb remains in the infinitive
