FUNCTIONS

It is not a function when…….

• An element produces two

different images

• An element does not have an

image
1 to 1 function: every element in the domain
has a unique image in the codomain.
Every element in the domain must have an
image in the codomain for it to be a function.
Domain & Range
DOMAIN: x-values RANGE (CODOMAIN): y-values

What is the domain? What is the range?

f(x) = 2x – 5

Find:

(a)f(-5)

Working:

2 (-5) – 5

-10 – 5 = - 15
g(x) = x + 1
-3

Find:

g(-10)

Working:

-10 + 1
-3

-9
-3

=3
h(x) = -4x +10

Find:

h(0)

Working:

-4(0) + 10

0 + 10

= 10
COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS:

f(x) = 8x + 1
g(x) = 2x – 3

Find:

f(g)

Working:

8x + 1

8(2x – 3) + 1 (Distribute here)

16x – 24 + 1

= 16x – 23
h(x) = -6x + 1
f(x) = 3x – 7

Find:

h(f)

Working:

-6x + 1
-6(3x – 7) + 1 (distribute here)

-18x + 42 + 1

-18x + 43
f(x) = 2x
h(x) = 3x + 5

Find:

f(h)(4)

Working: do f(h) first

2(3x + 5) (distribute here)

6x + 10

Now, plug in 4

6(4) + 10

= 34
INVERSE OF A FUNCTION:

Steps:

1.Change f(x) to y
2.Make x the subject
3.Change x to f -1

4.Change y to x
f(x) = 4x + 8

Find, f
-1

Step 1:

y = 4x + 8
Step 2:

y = 4x + 8

y – 8 = 4x

y–8=x
4
Steps’ 3 & 4:

x–8=f -1
