INTRODUCTION

 Production and emission of light by a chemical

reaction within a living organisms.
 It is produced when the chemical reaction occurs
Inside the organism between the two chemicals
luciferin and luciferase.
 The organism which produce bioluminescence is
known as bioluminescent organism and these are
found in deep sea around 90%.
3
CONTI….

 Bioluminescence is mainly found in algae, fungi, bacteria and other

animals such as fireflies, jellyfish, glow warms and angler fish etc.
 Bioluminescence is a form of luminescence or “cold light emission”.
 Cold light – less than 20% of the light generated thermal radiation or
heat.
 These animals mainly contains with photophores which helps in
bioluminescence. 4
EXAMPLE OF FISHES THAT HAVE BACTERIAL PHOTOPHORES

 Angler fish
 Pinecone fish
 Lantern Eyes/ flashlight fish
 Pony fishes

COLOURS OF BIOLUMINESCENCE

 Bioluminescence does come in different color.

 Depending on the habitat and organism.
 Blue- green easily visible in the deep ocean.
 Sensitive only to blue– green color.
 Most animals in the ocean cannot see red light.
