VADERIA PALMER

VADERIA PALMER

INDRODUCTION

 World War II was, arguably, the most significant and
influential event of the twentieth century. The devastation
is almost incalculable: total military and civilian deaths
are estimated at 70 to 85 million, about 3% of the global
population during that time. World War II also saw the
dawn of the nuclear age.
CAUSES

 Adolf Hitler's invasion of Poland in September 1939 drove
Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany,
marking the beginning of World War II. Over the next six
years, the conflict took more lives and destroyed more
land and property around the globe than any previous war.
Key players

 The Allied powers were led by Winston Churchill (United
Kingdom); Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union); Charles de
Gaulle (France); and Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S.
Truman (United States). The Axis powers were led by
Adolf Hitler (Germany), Benito Mussolini (Italy), and
Hideki Tojo (Japan).
MAJOR BATTLES

 The Allied victory at the second battle of El Alamein in
North Africa in November 1942 – a victory which inspired
one of Churchill's most memorable speeches – is a strong
contender, along with the D-Day invasion of Normandy
on 6 June 1944.
OUTCOMES

 Germany, Italy, and Japan were conquered and
occupied. The Soviet Union lost its most productive
citizens—more than twenty million died in the war.
Although the costs for the United States were grave, they
were less debilitating, and they opened important
opportunities.
CONCLUSION

 World War II was the biggest and deadliest war in history,
involving more than 30 countries. Sparked by the 1939
Nazi invasion of Poland, the war dragged on for six
bloody years until the Allies defeated the Axis powers of
Nazi Germany, Japan and Italy in 1945. World War II has
taught me different things.I learnt about the willpower of
humans and what it means when one's homeland is
invaded.
