Jigsaw Method
Jigsaw method develoved by Elliot Aronson in 1971, jigsaw is a cooperative learning
strategy where each student in a group takes responsibility for one chunk of the content,
then teaches it to the other group members. Like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, students fit
their individual chunks together to form a complete body of knowledge.
2. Appoint one student as the leader for each group. Initially, the most advanced
student in the school would be this student.
3. Divide the day's lesson into five until six segments. For instance, if you want
history students to learn about the text, you might divide a short definition of
that text, such as the meaning of recount text or descriptive text.
4. Each student is assigned to learn one chapter. Verify that students do have direct
access to their sections.
5. Give students time to read and familiarize themselves with their section, at least
twice. They don't need to memorize it.
6. Shape temporary "expert groups" by making one student join other students assigned
to the same section from each jigsaw group. In these expert groups, give students time
to discuss their segment's key points and rehearse their presentations to their jigsaw
group.
8. Ask each student to present her or his chapter to the group. Encourage other
students in the group to ask questions for clarification.
9. Move from group to group, and watch the cycle. When any party is having difficulty
(e.g., a member is dominating or disruptive), do a suitable intervention. Basically, the task
is best performed by the group leader. Leaders may be taught by whispering directions
about how to act before it is hanged from the chief.
10. Give a quiz on the content at the end of the session so that the students easily know
that these sessions are not only fun and games but actually count.
