 The city
Coimbra is a university city where almost 40 thousand
young people build their lives every day. The city grew,
developed and lives around its students, from its
economy, through its infrastructure, to places of leisure
and entertainment. The city is located in the coastal
center of Portugal, next to the River Mondego.
Between the mountains and the sea, with a strong
historical, architectural, cultural and natural heritage, it
is considered quiet and safe. With its structures linked
to culture, libraries and university and polytechnic
schools, it is the city of knowledge.
Tradition
Coimbra is a city of traditions, with a very unique spirit
marked by academic life and the dynamics of the student
community. The calendar is filled with academic
celebrations and parades, which assume a special
symbolism in the different stages of each student’s path.
The first academic party, in October marks the arrival of
new students at the beginning of school.
Queima das Fitas is considered the biggest student event
that takes place in Portugal. In May, the Monumental
Serenade begins the week, which is filled with concerts and
cultural activities.
