HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Many countries colonized West Asia including
the Assyrians, the Babylonians, Persians,
Greeks and Romans. When Jesus was born,
Palestine is still under Roman power. Many
factors cooperated in the establishment of
Christianity such as the Pax Romana and the
concept of Messiah of the Jews.
JESUS: Founder of Christianity
His ministry began when he was in his
early thirties. His teachings were
considered revolutionary during that
time. He criticized the uprightness and
insincerity of religious officials and
emphasized that God values service
and love.
JESUS: Founder of Christianity
He taught the new covenant of God to
send His begotten Son to save humanity
from their sins and restore the relationship
of people to God. Jesus attracted group of
followers who became His disciples and
called Him teacher. However, Jews did not
believe that He was the Messiah.

DIETY/GOD
God is seen as the creator and maintainer of the
universe and is believed to be:
OMNIPOTENT (all-powerful)
OMNISCIENT (all-knowing)
OMNIPRESENT (all-present)

God is also sacred, moral, unchangeable,
compassionate, graceful, timeless.
HOLY TRINITY
God is composed of three persons:
God the Father
God the Son (Jesus Christ)
Holy Spirit.
This doctrine was affirmed at the Council of
Nicea in 25 CE to counter the Arianism teaching

actual God.

APOSTLE’S CREED
I Believe in God, the father Almighty
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son Our Lord.
STORY OF CREATION AND BIG BANG
The story of creation narrates how God
created the universe in six days.

The Big Bang Theory states that the universe

began as an incredibly hot, very dense point in
space about 14 billion years ago. It then
underwent rapid expansion in no time and, as
it cooled, led to the creation of the stars,
galaxies and planets.

ADVENT
Refers to the season of waiting for the
birth of the Messiah which begins four
Sundays before Christmas and ending on
Christmas eve. It is time to reflect on the
sacrifice of Jesus for us and reminds us
also of the Second Coming of the Savior. It
came from the Latin word adventus
which means ‘coming’ or ‘visit’.
Advent 2022 will begin on
Sunday, November 27 and
ends on
Saturday, December 24,
2022.
LENT
Season observed by Christians in
preparation for Easter or resurrection of
Christ. Starts 40 days before Easter
signalled by Ash Wednesday. Christians
do rituals such as fasting, repentance,
moderation and self discipline. It is a time
to reflect on the suffering and sacrifice of
Jesus Christ. Lent came from lencten
meaning “spring”.
PENTECOST
Celebrated to commemorate the coming
of the Holy Spirit to early Christians. It
came from the Greek word pentekostos
which means “fifty”, pertaining to the
Jewish holiday celebrated every fifty days
from the end of the Passover. It is
narrated in Acts chapter 2.
