How we executed our roadmap
When we started, we gathered everyone for a two-day workshop. There, we
asked everyone to share their opinions on which features they’d like to see in the
SpaceWork platform. After hearing their ideas, we voted for which features were
most valuable, estimated the time it would take to build them, and formed a
roadmap for the first three months, and put the rest into backlog.

(However, we also remember and admit that half the things we have built have
nothing to do with the roadmap we created during this workshop, and were
instead the result of some people’s sparkles of inspiration on rainy Saturday
afternoons.)
 How we keep each other informed
We share our progress in a weekly slide deck so that everyone knows what’s
going on. We have a rule regarding the minimum number of GIFs that this
weekly deck should contain, as well as the maximum. (Both numbers are 12.)

Policies
How we handle sick days
We don’t let our sick coworkers into the office, no matter how eager they are to
work. Period. There’s a six-week budget of sick days per year, and you’re more
than welcome to use all of it (if necessary). We trust one another and
hope/expect that this policy will not be abused, which is why we don’t expect
doctor’s notes either.

There aren't that many hospitals around here anyway, and the queues are long.

How we take vacation
We’re currently trying out an unlimited vacation policy.

We encourage a minimum of three weeks vacation per year. We’d love to say
that there’s a fine for not taking the necessary rest, but our legal department said
that would be illegal.

Please submit a vacation request no later than one week before you plan to leave.
Once your request is approved, make sure to let your coworkers know you’ll be
off so that your absence doesn’t catch them by surprise.

Helpful resources
Time & date
• The Martian year lasts 687 days, roughly two Earth years

• The average day length 24 hours and 37 minutes. A Martian day is called sol,
by the way.

• A Darian calendar is used to keep track of months and dates. (See next slide.)
You can use this tool to convert the dates on Earth to dates on Mars and vice
versa.
Climate
• Mars is much colder than Earth. The average temperature is about -80º F (-
60º C), although it can vary from -195ºF (-125ºC) near the poles during the
winter to as much as a comfortable 70º F (20º C) at midday near the equator.

• There are four seasons, much like on Earth. Winters in the south are long
and cold while those in the north are short and warm. Similarly, summers in
the north are long and cool, while summers in the south are short and hot.

• At times, it even snows on Mars. The Martian snowflakes, made of carbon

dioxide rather than water, are thought to be very small particles that create a
fog effect rather than appearing as falling snow. The north and south polar
regions of Mars are capped by ice, much of it made from carbon dioxide, not
water.
