Objective: Infer how dark and colored
objects affect the ability to absorb
heat

 Did you ever wonder why people

recommend light-coloured clothes
in summer and dark in winter or
rainy season?
Q: How does color affect heating by
absorption of light?
Let’s have an
Activity # 1…..
Hypothesis: If the color is light, then
the temperature will remain the same
or cool down.
The opposite for dark color
You will need:
Thermometers Measuring cup
Containers/plastic cups Water
Cellophanes (any see through colored
sheets)
Tape and scissors
Timer
Lamp/ Sunlight
Procedure:
1. Cut the cellophane to the shape of
the container
2. Pour the same amount of water on
each of the containers (used 100ml for
each)
3. Tape the cellophanes over filled
containers
4. Leave the containers under a lamp
or sunlight for 10 minutes. Wait and
see the result.
Make sure to start at the same
temperature.
After a few minutes (10 minutes to be
exact)
5. Do this for the colors you have
6. Record your data/observation

BLUE 25 ◦ C
GREEN 25 ◦ C
YELLOW 25 ◦ C
Let’s start…..
DATA
The colors are in order based on
their temperature.
Colors - [Start; End]
Blue - 25; 32
Green - 25; 28
Yellow - 25; 25
Red - 25; 23
Guide Questions:
1. Which among the following plastic
cups have light-colored sheets?
2. What is the temperature of plastic
each cup? Red sheet___, Blue sheet___,
green sheet___, yellow sheet___
3. What can you say about the
temperature of the cups with red and
yellow sheets?
4. Describe the temperature of the
cups with red and yellow sheets?
5. Which cups absorbs more energy
which is heat?
Observation:
1. Blue and Green’s temperature went
up. But blue rose more.
2. Yellow stayed at the same
temperature.
3. Red’s temperature dropped a bit
4. Blue was most warm and red was
most cool
Research
Light colors will reflect the energy
given by the energy source (lamp, sun,
candle, etc.) while dark colors will
absorb the energy which is heat.
Example: white will reflect energy while
black would absorb all.
It is hard to compare colors because the
shade of the colors will also matter.

Formative Assessment:
How does dark colored object affects
its ability to absorb heat?
Application:
What do you think would likely to
happen if you wear dark clothes
on sunny days?
Generalization/Conclusion
Make a journal about what you
have learned on the effect of the
absorption of heat on black
objects.
My Journal
I have learned that______________
I realized that __________________

Conclusion:
The lighter colors had lower
temperature (Celsius) than the
darker colors
Assignment:
What hat/cap would you prefer to
use when it’s hot outside? The
dark colored hat/cap or the light
ones? Why?
