Plan and Design SBA lab Due January 18, 2024

Name: ___________Genesis Scott________________________________

• Statement: A boy claims that if he wears darker color clothing, he feels hotter. He
further claims he can arrange five (5) of his shirts in order of hottest to coldest. He then
makes an arrangement of black, red, orange, green and white.
• Task : Plan and design an experiment to test if his claim is true.

Topic: COLOR AND HEAT ABSORPTION

Hypothesis
. If the color is darker then it will absorb more heat, then light
color.

Aim To determine whether darker or light colors absorb more heat

Apparatus/materials Clear jar, Food coloring and Thermometer

• Plan plastic cylinder

• Water (same temperature)
• 5 different colored paper with the colors being black,
orange, yellow, blue, and white.
• Thermometer
• sun
Method (written in steps
and numbered) 1. Obtain five identically sized translucent plastic cylinders.
2. Wrap each cylinder in a different color of paper, five times.
3. Fill each cylinder with precisely ½ cup of the same water.

4. Use the thermometer to record the temperature readings for

each cylinder and write them down.
5. Position all five cylinders in the same spot under the sun.
6. After 30 minutes, take the cylinders out of the sun.
7. Measure and record the dimensions of every cylinder after
the 30-minute period.

Variables: Independent: The weather

Dependent: The five colors of paper

Control: The amount of water put in the jars and the amount of
dye put into the water
Expected Results It is expected that barker colors will absorb more heat than
lighter colors
Explanation of results The quickest materials and items to radiate (give off) and
(based on research) absorb heat are black or dark colored ones. Lighter hues reflect
lighter, which is the reason for this. Darker hues are better light
absorbers than heat absorbers. This is contrary to popular belief.
More light is absorbed by darker hues.

Precaution Ensure that the cylinder's water does not spill.

Take care not to burn yourself when you check the temperature.

Limitation

It could decide to rain or there can be a strong wind while the

experiment is being conducted.

Source of Error The duration of the cylinders' exposure to sunlight.
