SC1: All will be able to draw a quadratic and linear graph on the same
set of axes

SC2: Most will be able to use the graphs to find the solutions of the
original equation
SC3: Some will be able to explain why some graphs have the same pair
of solutions

Where in life might you see curved lines like the ones you
have been drawing?
Key points:

• Quadratic graphs are curved

• They always have an x2 in them

• Quadratic graph is always U/ -

Using one Graph to solve another – Example 1
y = x2 + 2x
 Use a Graph to solve the Equation;

‘x2 + 2x = 4’

 Draw graphs of each side of the

equation
y=4
y = x2 + 2x
y=4

 The solutions are where the

graphs cross

 The possible values for x are

about -3.8 and 1.8
Using one Graph to solve another – Example2

 Use a Graph to solve the Equation;

y = x2 - x
‘x2 - x = 2x + 3’

 Draw graphs of each side of the

equation

y = x2 - x
y = 2x + 3

 The solutions are where the

graphs cross

 The possible values for x are

about -0.8 and 3.8
y = 2x + 3
Using graphs to solve quadratic equations

More example to understand the concept

The graph of y = x2 + 2x is shown below.
By drawing a suitable line on the graph solve the equation x2 + 2x – 3 = 0

y = x2 + 2x x2 + 2x – 3 = 0
If I take away 3 from
left hand side, then
this equation because
same as original one

x2 + 2x = 3
This means y = 3

x = -3, x = 3
The graph of y = x2 + 2x is shown below.
By drawing a suitable line on the graph solve the equation x2 + 3x = 0

y = x2 + 2x x2 + 3x = 0
Again, try to make it
like original equation

x2 + 2x + x = 0
x2 + 2x = - x
This means y = -x

x = -3, x = 0
