Autonomous Navigation Systems

1) The document discusses different types of area navigation (RNAV) systems that allow aircraft to navigate without relying directly on ground-based facilities. 2) It describes the differences between basic RNAV (B-RNAV) and precision RNAV (P-RNAV), with B-RNAV introduced to enable increased air traffic capacity with minimal aircraft upgrades. 3) Flight management systems (FMS) are described as on-board multi-purpose systems that comprise a flight management computer, automatic flight control system, aircraft navigation system, and electronic flight displays. The FMS allows routes to be pre-programmed and aids continuous position calculation.

Aerial Navigation
Autonomous Navigation Systems and Area
Navigation Systems, RNAV/FMS
01 Introduction
02 Difference between B-RNAV and P-RNAV
03 Flight Management System
Introduction
NDB/ADF Equipment
An area navigation (RNAV) system is any system that allows the aircraft to
be navigated to the required level of accuracy without the requirement
to fly directly over ground based facilities.
• VOR/DME
• ILS/MLS
• LORAN
• GNSS
• INS/IRS
• ADC
• Time
Introduction

• The computer estimates the aircraft position using the fitted

navigation sensors and compares the estimation to the defined
route.

• RNAV allows aircraft to take a more direct flight path appropriate

to the route they are flying
Difference between B-RNAV and P-RNAV

B-RNAV was introduced to enable en route capacity gains to be achieved

with minimal aircraft capability.

• LORAN - Short for long range navigation was a hyperbolic radio navigation
system
• DOPPLER - Doppler Navigation is a self-contained aircraft navigation system
• OMEGA - Omega was a very long-range Very Low Frequency (VLF)
navigation system and the first navigation system providing true global
coverage.
• Inertial Reference System (IRS) - Refers to a solid-state unit of three Ring
Laser Gyros detecting accelerations in 3 dimensions
• Inertial Navigation System (INS)traditionally (1960’s and 70’s) referred to a
self-contained navigation system
Flight Management System

A Flight Management System (FMS) is an on-board multi

purpose navigation, performance and aircraft operations.

An FMS comprises four main components:

 The Flight Management Computer (FMC);
 The Automatic Flight Control or Automatic Flight Guidance
System (AFCS or AFGS) ;
 The Aircraft Navigation System;
 An Electronic Flight Instrument System(EFIS) or equivalent
electromechanical instrumentation.
FMC
The FMC is a computer system that uses a large data base to allow
routes to be pre-programmed and fed into the system by means of a
data loader.
The Navigation System is an integrated package which calculates
continuously the aircraft position.

It may include Inertial Reference System (IRS) and Global Positioning

System (GPS) inputs in addition to receivers for ground based aids.
