WHAT IS COMPOSITE MATERIALS?

 A material system composed of two

or more physically distinct phases
whose combination pruduces
aggregate properties that are
different from when they are
separate.
 One material is continuous matrix
and other is reinforcement.

FUNCTIONS OF MATRIX MATERIAL

 Protect phase from envinonment

 Transfer stress to phases
 Holds the imbedded phase in place
 When a load applied, the matrix shares the load
with the secondary phase
