areas of improvements

and can cope with stress.

others.
▶ 4.You are productive , and have a sense of purpose and
have meaning in life.

▶ 5.You are satisfied with your life, yet strive to realize


the best of your potentials as an individual

▶ 6.You enjoy positive emotions and are able to handle


negative emotions maturely.
Mental Health
-includes our emotional, psychological and social
well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act.
Factors contribute to mental health problems:
*Biological factors such as genes or brain chemistry.
*Life experiences such as trauma or abuse.
*Family history of mental health problems.

IN ADOLESCENE
-The challenges, difficulties and stresses
that come the transition an adolescent
goes through can make the adolescent
psychologically vulnerable.
In effect:
Mental health and well-being can be
compromised and this can lead to mental health
problems.
The most commont mental health problems
among adolescents all over the world are
depression and anxiety; conduct disorder amd
eating disorder.

is manageable.

as alcohol and substance abuse and
adolescent pregnancy.

BIOLOGICAL FACTORS
Neurotransmitters- aid the brain nerve cells communicate with
each other. If these chemicals are not in balance or are not working
properly, messages from the senses or organs may not take it
through the brain correctly, leading to symptoms of mental illness.
● Genetics (hereditary)
● Infections
● Brain defects or injury
● Prenatal damage
● Substance abuse

-include the person’s negative interpretation,
attitude, thoughts, and feelings about
him/herself, other people, and the events in
his/her life.

• Adolescents face so many situations
that can theaten mental health.These
are the risk factors that may endanger
one’s psychological well-
being.However,the way you deal with
and handle these threats,risk
factors,and vulnerabilities can become
the very exact things that make you into
a person who is mentally healthy and
psychological well.
• An individual who is mentally healthy does not
give up easily on life’s challenges and does not
run away from problems.This is what is called
resilience, a characteristics of persons with high
psychological well being.People who are resilient
are able to succesfully recover after something
had has happened to them.Mentally healthy
individuals acknowledge that there will always
learn to cope with these challenges,and rise
above these threats to their mental health.

strong,healthy,or successful again after
something bad happens
• Protective Factors of Mental Health and Well-
Being
When the stressors and the challenges of
life can get overwhelming the following factors
(taken from references compiled by the American
Psychologocal Assosiation,2002) safeguard your
Psychological Well-being.
*Positive Social Relationships-
the nurturing positive relationships that
adolescents have w/ significant others is central to
the attainment of well-being.This may be found in
caring friends,and more specifically and
importantly in caring adults.Interestingly,even the
presence of pets as companions is also observed
to promote psychological well-being among
adolescents.
• *Stress management-
• during the adolescent stage where one is flooded w/ all
sorts of stress and stressors,the ability to cope w/ stress,and
to manage one’s emotions maturely are key in the
promotion of resilience.

• *Being Entrusted with a Sense of Responsibility and


Accountability- the adolescents is in a stage of pursuing
independence nonetheless,being entrusted w/ tasks,and
put in charge of undertakings tends to enhance resilience in
the adolescent,particularly so when adequate guidance and
feedback by supportive adults is available and accessible to
the adolescent.
