The long term causes of WWI can be traced back to alliances between European powers like the Triple Entente between Britain, France and Russia, and the Triple Alliance between Germany, Austro-Hungary and Italy. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist in June 1914, these alliances pulled the major powers into war as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and Russia and Germany backed Austria, leading Germany to also declare war on Russia and France. By August 1914, World War I had begun as the web of alliances had turned a regional conflict into a global war.
