Creating/removing a desktop icon
Click Start, All Programs
Right-click a program name
Move the mouse pointer over
Send to and click Desktop
(create shortcut) – an icon will
appear on the Desktop
To delete the icon (not the
program), right-click it and
select Delete

Find the file in Windows
Explorer or Documents
Right click on the file
Click on Send to and chose
Desktop (Create Shortcut)

Changing the background
In the Search bar of the Start Menu,
type and select Personalization
Alternatively Right-click the Desktop
picture
In the menu that appears, left-click the
Personalize option to show the
Settings
Click the Background tab
Scroll down the Background: list and
click a background or browse to chose
a picture from your hard disk
When you find one you like, click
Choose Picture

Setting up a screen saver
Right-click the Desktop picture
In the menu that appears, left-click
the Personalize option to show the
Settings
Click Lock screen then Screen saver
settings
Choose the one you want
Set the time
You can preview it
When you have decided on one, click
Apply (and OK if you want to close
the box)

Changing the screen resolution
In the Search bar of the Start Menu,
type and select Display
Alternatively Right-click the Desktop
picture
In the menu that appears, left-click
the Display settings option to show
the Settings
From Resolution choose the
appropriate resolution
Click Apply –
Click OK if you want to close the
box

Changing the date and time

From the Start menu, select Control


Panel then click on Clock, Language,
and Region click on Date and Time
then choose Change date and time
settings
Make any changes in the Date and
Time Properties dialogue box and
click OK

Changing the volume settings
From the Start menu, select
Control Panel, Hardware and
Sound, then choose sound
In the Adjust system volume,
drag the slider to adjust the
sound level
Click OK

Changing the keyboard language
Your computer will probably have
English (United Kingdom) set as
default
If you need to enter text in a
different language you can add
different keyboard layouts
From the Start menu, select Control
Panel then click on Clock,
Language, and Region then click on
Add a language
Double click on the Language that
you want to add.

Print Screen facility
It can be useful to take a
screenshot of your screen
To take a screenshot of the
whole screen, press the Print
Screen key (sometimes labelled
Prt Scr) on the keyboard
Click Paste in Microsoft® Word
to copy the screenshot into a
document

Compressing files
If you want to send a file In Windows®, right-click
as an e-mail attachment, the file you want to
compressing it first makes compress
it smaller so it will be Select Send to,
quicker to send and Compressed (zipped)
receive folder
As a general rule, Or use a compression
compress files greater utility such as WinZip® or
than 500kB StuffIt®

To unzip a file/folder, right-


click it and select Extract
files and then choose the
specified location

Installing/uninstalling software
Most application programs supplied From the Start menu, select Control
on CD-ROM auto-run when the CD Panel, under Programs select
is inserted into the drive and on- Uninstall a program
screen instructions explain how to To remove the program right click or
proceed. double click the program
To remove an application program
file, it must be uninstalled correctly.
Some applications place an
uninstall routine in the Start menu.
Otherwise you should use the Add
or Remove Programs tool in the
Control Panel.
