INTRODUCTION

• SPILL MANAGEMENT
To clean the spills of blood ,body fluids, chemical and
radioactive materials
always treat it as an infective agent
BIOLOGICAL SPILL MANAGEMENT

Spill of a blood or body fluids

small spill
large spill
Spill kit
Biological spill kit
Workman’s gloves
apron
mask
shoe cover or plastic bag to cover the shoes
absorbent material
bio-hazard waste bag
Chemical spill kit
1) universal spill absorbent- 1:1:1mixture of flor-dri (or
unscented kitty litter) , sodium bicarbonate and sand
2)Absorbent pads and rolls
3)Acid spill neutralizer : sodium bicarbonate, sodium
carbonate or calcium carbonate
4)Alkali spill neutralizer: sodium bisulphate, boric acid or
oxalic acid
5)Solvent or organic liquid absorbent
6)Protective clothing
Small spill [up to 10 ml ]
inform the coworker
spill alert sign board
wear appropriate clothing
cover the area with absorbent moistened with hypochlorite solution
hypochlorite solution – 1% dilution containing minimum 500ppm
chlorine
wipe the spill area with absorbent
discard the paper as infected waste
repeat the process
wipe the area with cloth mop moistened with 1% hypochlorite
solution
allow it to dry
put the contaminated items in a bio-hazard bag for disposal
Large spills [ more than 10 ml ]
1) Confine the contaminated area
2)Wear workman’s gloves and other PPE
3) Cover the spill with absorbent material
4) Flood the spill with 10% hypochlorite solution
alternative- chlorine granules can be sprinkled
5) wait for few minutes
6) Remove and discard the paper as infected waste
7)Repeat the process
8)All the contaminated items should be placed in a bio-hazardous
bag for disposal
MERCURY SPILL
1)Never touch with bare hands
2)Evacuate the area
3)put on the mask and gloves
4)Remove jewellery
5)Locate mercury beads
6)Use syringe without a needle / eyedropper and a sticky tape
7)Sprinkle Sulphur or zinc powder on the surface and wipe it with
dampened paper
8) dispose the contaminated items in the biohazard bag
Chemical spill
Neutralizing acid spills
1)contain the liquid first
2) Sprinkle powder over the spill slowly, starting from the outside
3)Acid is neutralized if effervescence ceases in the presence of
excess bicarbonate
4) Avoid breathing in the fine powder and the gas evolved(co2)
Neutralizing alkali spills
1) Ensure that there is adequate ventilation
2) Eliminate all sources of ignition
3)Liberally apply the alkali neutralizer around the spill from outside to
inside
4) Alkali neutralized no more frizzing from the liquid
Caution
1) neutralized alkali may produce heat
2) avoid handling spilled material until absorption is complete
3) use non metal tools to clean up the spill
