There are many definitions of linguistics :
1. Ronald W. Langacker (1973:5) “linguistics is the study of
human language”.
2. Jhon Lyons (1975:1) “linguistics may be defined as the
scientific study of language”.
3. Bauer (2012:3), “Linguistics is the word meaning ‘relating to
language’ as well as the word meaning ‘relating to
linguistics”.
4. Cook (2002:20), “Linguistics is the academic discipline
concerned with the relation of knowledge about language
to decision making in the real world”.
