What is a Relative Pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun.


Relative pronouns are pronouns that refer back to something
that’s already been mentioned in the sentence. For example:
‘that’ is a
relative
This is the dress that I’m going to wear to the party. pronoun. It
refers back to
‘the dress’.
These words are all relative pronouns:

Which Relative Pronoun Should I Use?
who You should always use ‘who’ if you’re talking about a person.

My older sister, who is almost eleven, is planning her birthday party.

We’re referring back to a person here (my


older sister), so we use ‘who’.

that You should use ‘that’ or


‘which’ if you’re talking
Now we’re referring back to
which about an object. a thing (the decorations), so
we use ‘that’.
I don’t like the decorations that she has chosen.

Examples
Can you spot the relative pronouns in these sentences?

I’m wrapping some presents that I bought for my sister. “that” is a relative
pronoun.
It refers back to
“some presents”.

There are the children who have been invited to the party.
“who” is a relative pronoun.
It refers back to “the children”.

The birthday cake, which my mum made, is shaped like a car.


“which” is a relative pronoun.
It refers back to “the birthday cake”.
