LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this presentation, students will be able to:

1. Origin of convex mirror

2. What is a convex mirror.
3. The uses of convex mirror.
4. Image formation of convex mirror.
INTRODUCTION:
• A mirror is the invention of the ancient world that
is still of much importance in the 21st century. This
presentation is about the convex mirror, its
applications, uses, and the image formed by the
convex mirror.
BACKGROUND

• REID R. STOUT, 74, was the inventor of convex mirrors. The

convex mirror originated in Europe with the development of glass
blowing in the Medieval-Renaissance period. In French the name
of convex mirror- is unique – 'oeil de sorcière’ which typically
translates to 'witch's eye’.
A CONVEX MIRROR!
1. A convex mirror is also called a divergent mirror.
2. A convex mirror diverges the light when reflected over it.
3. The images formed by the convex mirror are Virtual, erect, and diminished.
4. As image distance is decreased, the image size is increased
USES OF CONCAVE MIRRORS
• Shaving mirrors.
• Head mirrors.
• Ophthalmoscope.
• Astronomical telescopes.
• Headlights.
• Solar furnaces.
CONCAVE VS CONVEX MIRRORS

CONVEX CONCAVE

Convex mirror is also known as

diverging mirror Concave mirror is also known as
converging mirror
IMAGE FORMATION OF CONVEX
MIRROR
• Virtual images are always formed by convex mirrors.
• Erect images are always formed by convex mirrors
• Diminished images are always formed by convex mirrors
SUMMARY
1. Convex mirror is also known as a diverging mirror.
2. Convex mirror diverges the light after reflection.
3. The images formed by convex mirror are virtual, erect, and diminished.
4. The are a lot of industrial applications of convex mirrors.
CONCLUSION

 Another name for convex mirror is a diverging mirror. In the

presentation the common properties of the convex mirror along with its
applications was discussed. In addition to this the image formed by the
convex mirror was highlighted.
ASSIGNMENT - QUESTIONS

1. The focal length of a convex mirror is 20 cm, and the object distance is 30 cm.
Determine the image distance.

2. The focal length of a convex mirror is 20 cm, and the object distance is 30 cm.
Determine the magnification of image.
ASSIGNMENT - ANSWERS
SOLUTION – 1
• 1/di = 1/f – 1/do = -1/20 – 1/30 = -1/12
• Therefore: di = -12/1 = -12 cm [Virtual image
SOLUTION – 2
• m = – di / do = -(-12)/30 = 12/30 = 0.4
• m = 0.4 ; means 0.4 time smaller than the object [Upward image ]
