What is vector?

A vector is a quantity or phenomenon that has two

independent properties: magnitude and direction. The term
also denotes the mathematical or geometrical representation of
such a quantity. Examples of vectors in nature are velocity,
momentum, force, electromagnetic fields, and weight.

02. Question

An airplane flies due west at an airspeed of 425 mph. The wind is blowing from
the northeast at 40 mph. What is the ground Speed of the airplane?
1

03. Solution 1

Find
→ the vector for the wind: Vector for the plane:

𝑤 =[40cos(225),40sin(225)] 𝑝=-425
=-28.28-28.28

When the air speed act together with the plane speed add their
vector to find the resultant vector:
→→
𝑝+𝑤=-425+(-28.28-28.28)
=-453.28 -28.28
To find the speed we have to find the magnitude of the
resultant vector:

|𝑝 +𝑤|
→ →

=454.17mph

02. Question

Jane’s car is stuck in the mud. Lisa and Jed come along in a truck to help her out. They attached one end
of a tow truck’s trailer hitch, and the truck’s trailer hitch, and the truck starts to pull. Meanwhile, Jane
and Jed get behind the car and push. The truck generates a horizontal force of 300lb on the car. Jane and
Jed are pushing at a slight upward angle and generate a force of 150lb on the car. These force can be
represented by the vector, as shown in figure. The angle between these vector is 15. Find the resultant
force (the vector sum) and give its magnitude to the nearest tenth of pound..

03. Solution

Truck vector:
Resultant force:
=300 =300+(144.89
=444.89
The tension that generate from the pulling:
=[150cos(15)sin(15 To find the tension of the cable we must
=144.89 +32.22 find the magnitude of the vector :

70 𝑚𝑠
35

A ball is thrown with an initial velocity of 70 meter per second., at an angle

of 35° with the horizontal. Find the vertical and horizontal components of the
velocity( find the vector).
1

03. Solution 1

70 𝑚𝑠 −1

35

In order to find the vertical and the horizontal velocity of

the ball we must find the vector:
=[70cos(35+70sin(35)
=57.34+40.15

the horizontal velocity of the ball is 57.34 meter

per second and the vertical velocity of the ball is
40.15 meter per second
