G o l d e n R i c e is a geneti cally m o d i fi e d variety of rice that contains beta- carotene, a
precursor of V i ta m i n A. This innovati on a i m s to c o m b a t V i ta m i n A deficiency, a
m a j o r p u b l i c health issue in d eve l o p i n g countries. B y u n l o c k i n g th e potenti al of
G o l d e n Rice, w e c a n im p rove nutriti on a n d save lives.
G M O crops, i n c l u d i n g G o l d e n Rice, have s p a rked d eb ates re ga rd i n g their safety a n d
environmental impac t. However, n u m e r o u s studies h ave s h o w n that G M O c rops are safe for
c o n s u m p ti o n a n d c a n contribute to sustainable agriculture. T h e b e n e fi t s of G M O crops
i n c l u d e increa se d c r o p producti vity, r e d u c e d p e sti cide use, a n d i m p r o v e d nutriti onal content.
Challenges and Future Prospects

D espite t h e potenti al benefits, G M O crops

face c h a l l en ges s u c h as regulatory hurdles
a n d p u b l i c percepti on. However, o n g o i n g
research a n d a d va n c e m e n t s in
b iotech nology offer p ro m i s i n g prospects.

u n d e rsta n d i n g G M O c rops to u n l o c k their
full potenti al a n d a ddress glob al food
security a n d nutriti onal needs.
