Natural composites
development
Coir –
as a source
Jute – as source
Jute – Thermoplastic composites for foot ware
 They can replace leather, leather board,
synthetic material
 Better shape retention , mouldability,

flexibility etc.
 A project from IJIRA, Kolkata
Jute – Coir/bamboo composite
Boards as wood substitute
 Thin layer of jute fibres impregnated with
phenolic resin is used – wood like finish
 Jute + rubber wood + coir = replacement for

plywood
 Project launched by Natura Division of M/S

Mponeng
- the deepest gold mine in the world
 The depth of the gold mine is about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers)

 The rock is so hot underground that ice has to be pumped down to cool the
tunnels (a slurry supply accounts for 6000 tons of ice a day)

 Mponeng excavates 6000 tons of rock per day and each rock yields 0.35
ounces from a ton of rock (i.e 28.35 gms * 0.35 = 9.92 gms of gold per ton of
rock)

 Desulforudis audaxviator is the sole living species found in that dark.

 It is capable of producing everything itself . Scientists think that bacterium

has not seen the surface of the earth in millions of years

 Biggest killer of miners is not mining accidents but TB (Tuberculosis)
