BOX
MINERAL
RESOURCES INSTRUCTIONS
Hey everyone, get ready for something cool – the "Mineral Mystery
Box" activity is here!

The box is filled with hidden treasures that show off different minerals
MINERAL

from deep within the Earth. How awesome is that?

We're passing the box around, and guess what? We can hold it, but no
peeking inside. The anticipation is real!

Time to pick an object from the box, all by touch. No looking! Let's feel
the weight, shape, and maybe even give it a gentle shake.

Grabbing a note card to write down what you found!

REVIEW
RESOURCES oBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should
have been able to:
a) identify correctly the mineral resources that
MINERAL

human beings harvest, process, and use in their

daily lives;
b) discuss properly the effects of irresponsible
mining to local communities; and
c) present properly the environmental issues
arising on Tingloy island through role play.

METALLIC RESOURCES
RESOURCES
MINERAL

Metallic resources are natural materials that are primarily

composed of metals or metal compounds and are used for various
purposes due to their unique properties.
S11/12ES-Ic-7

METALLIC RESOURCES
1. Copper: A highly conductive metal used in electronics, wiring,
RESOURCES
and plumbing.
2. Aluminum: Lightweight metal used in construction,
packaging, and transportation.
MINERAL

3. Iron: Essential for steel production, used in construction and

manufacturing.
4. Coal: Fossil fuel used for energy generation and industrial
processes.
5. Petroleum and Natural Gas: Fossil fuels used for fuel,
chemicals, and various products.
6. Lithium: Key component in batteries for electronics and
electric vehicles.
S11/12ES-Ic-7

METALLIC RESOURCES
7. Rare Earth Elements: Group of minerals with specialized
applications in technology, from magnets to electronics.
RESOURCES
8. Gold, Silver, and Platinum Group Metals: Precious metals used in
jewelry, electronics, and industry.
9. Phosphates: Minerals used in fertilizers to enhance plant growth.
MINERAL

10. Sulfur: Element used in chemicals, manufacturing, and energy

production.
11. Salt: Essential mineral for food preservation and various
industrial uses.
12. Silica (Silicon Dioxide): Used in glass, electronics, and as a
strengthening agent.

MINERAL
S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

PURPOSE OF MINING
RESOURCES
Almost every aspect of our
modern lives relies on minerals or
mineral products, such as base
MINERAL

metals, precious metals, coking coal,

iron sands, aggregates, limestone
and industrial minerals.
S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

PURPOSE OF MINING
These are all vital elements used

MINING
S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

STEPS OF MINING
PROSPECTING
RESOURCES

• Looking for the ore

body
MINERAL

• The ore body is a large

deposit that can yield a
large amount of the
required ore
Ore body
S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

STEPS OF MINING
DRILLING
RESOURCES

• A small part of the ore is extracted to

determine the resulting ore, ore’s quality,
MINERAL

and the amount of ore minerals.

S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

STEPS OF MINING
MODELING
RESOURCES

• Determining the ore’s size, shape and grade

distribution throughout the deposit to apply
MINERAL

appropriate mining methods

S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

STEPS OF MINING
IDENTIFYING AND ASSESSING POTENTIAL IMPACTS
RESOURCES
• Consideration on the social and environmental
aspects
• Finding ways of mitigating any consequence of
MINERAL

the mining operation

S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

STEPS OF MINING
DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING THE MINE
RESOURCES
Engineer and scientists work together to create the
appropriate mine and design.
MINERAL
S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

STEPS OF MINING
ORE EXTRACTION
RESOURCES
High grade ores are separated from the rest of the
deposit
MINERAL

Did you know?

High-grade ore contains a

large concentration of the desired
mineral. It has less impurities.
Low-grade ore has a smaller
concentration. It has more
impurities.
S11/12ES-Ic-d-8

STEPS OF MINING
MILLING
RESOURCES
The ore is crushed and concentrated; waste
minerals are released.
