PULSE OXIMETRY

By IRAM Mushtaq
1. The pulse oximeter, or Pulse Ox, is an electronic device that
measures the saturation of oxygen carried in your red
blood cells.
Pulse Oximetry 2. observes a rapid measurement of oxygen saturation level in
your body without using needles or taking a blood sample.
 Finger
 Toe
 Ear
 Nose
 Tongue

Sites of prob  Cheeks

placement  Esophagus
 Forehead
 Baby foot
NORMAL RANG:
Normal O2 level in a pulse oxymeter2usuallay
range from 95-100%
 The purpose of pulse oximetry is to see if your blood is well
oxygenated.
 Medical professionals may use pulse oximeters to monitor the
health of people with conditions that affect blood oxygen
levels, especially while they’re in the hospital.

Purpose And This can include

Uses  Asthma
 Lung cancer
 Anemia
 Heart attack or heart failure
 Congenital heart disease
 Endotracheal intubation.
 Cardiac arrest.
 Procedural sedation.

Indication of  Asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

pulse oximetry  Respiratory complaints.

 Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
 Sleep disorders/sleep apnea.
 Shunts in cyanotic heart disease
Currently available oximeters use two light-emitting diodes
(LEDs) that emit light at the 660 nm (red) and the 940 nm
(infrared) wavelengths. These two wavelengths are used because
O2Hb and Hb have differentabsorption spectra at these particular
wavelengths.

Principals of Beer,s Law :

The absorbance ( A) of light passing through a medium is
pulse oximetry proportional to the con centration ( c) of the medium and its
molar extinction coefficient.
Lambert’s law :
The absorbance of light passing through a medium is
proportional to the path length.
