     Around the world, a C-section rate of approximately 19 percent seems to be ideal for
    the health of both women and newborns, according to an analysis of childbirth in 194
    countries published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
     In the United States, however, about one in three births happen by C-section, a rate
    that has risen dramatically over the past few decades, from 5 percent in 1970 and 20
    percent in 1996. By contrast, about 16 percent of births in Finland and 24 percent in
    the United Kingdom are from C-sections.
