Give at least 20 facts and figures about global health and well-being
1. Global average life expectancy increased by 5 years between 2000 and 2015,
the fastest increase since the 1960s.
2. Globally, health life expectancy (HLE) at birth in 2015 was estimated at 63.1
years.
3. In 2015, more than 16,000 children under age five died every day.
4. 45% of deaths among children under age five occur during the first four weeks
of life.
5. In 2015, an estimated 2.6 million babies were stillborn.
6. 1.3 million deaths in 2015 were attributable to hepatitis
7. 94% of all maternal deaths are in low- and lower-middle income countries, and
over 55% of countries have fewer than 40 nurses and midwifery staff per 10,000
people.
8. Less than half of the people in the world have access to essential health
services.
9. In 2018, it’s thought that 6.2 million people under the age of 15 died. Of these –
mostly preventable – deaths, 5.3 million were children under the age of five, and
half of that number were in the first month of their life.
10. An increasing proportion of child deaths – and four out of every five deaths of
children under five – are in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
11. In sub-Saharan Africa, children are more than 15 times more likely to die
before the age of five than those in wealthy countries. Healthcare disruptions
due to COVID-19 could reverse decades of improvements, the UN says. This
could result in hundreds of thousands of additional under-five deaths this year.
12. The pandemic has interrupted childhood immunization programmes in about
70 countries.
13. Illness and deaths caused by communicable diseases are expected to spike due
to the crisis, with people unable or afraid to visit healthcare facilities for check-
ups, vaccinations and even urgent medical care.
14. The cancellation of health services could lead to a 100% increase in malaria
deaths in sub-Saharan Africa, the UN says.
15. HIV is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age worldwide.
16. Lockdowns and border closures have affected the production and distribution of
medicines, which could lead to price hikes and supply issues. It’s estimated
that prices of exported antiretroviral medicines from India could rise to up to
25% higher than normal.
17. In all, an additional 18 million health workers are needed, mainly in low- and
lower-middle income countries, if the world is to realize the SDG of achieving
universal health coverage by 2030.
18. Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, affecting 264 million
people.
19. Around 1 in 5 of the world’s children and adolescents have a mental disorder.
20. About half of mental disorders begin before the age of 14.
