Adhesion

• Adhesion occurs between water molecules and other surfaces This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under
CC BY-SA-NC.
• How does adhesion work?
• Water molecules can form hydrogen bonds with non-water molecules
• This causes attraction to surfaces that are not electrically neutral.
• How does adhesion play a part in the rainbow rose phenomenon?
• Adhesion + cohesion play a significant part in a capillary action in the xylem of a
plant.
• Capillary action is caused by the adhesive forces exceeding the cohesive forces in the
xylem
• Therefore, the dye (polar molecule) dissolves with water (polar molecule)
• The resultant mixture will be pulled up by capillary action to the white rose and
other parts of the plant
• The dye will then stain the petals and cause the rainbow rose phenomenon.
Perspiration
Why do we sweat?
 Homeostasis

How does sweat cool us when it evaporates?

 Latent heat of vaporization
Homeostasis
A state of balance among all the body systems needed for the body to survive and function
correctly
Vaporisation

Latent heat of Vaporisation The process of Vaporisation

Changing state of Liquid to Gas It requires more energy to break down of Hydrogen bonds to
change the state from Liquid to Gas

How do we cool when sweat evaporates?

When evaporation occurs, the energy used from the vaporised liquid will reduce the temperature in
our body, resulting in latent of vaporisation.
Importance of perspiration
- Its main function is to control body temperature
- Sweat also keeps the body cool as it evaporates from the
skin, your body overheats which can be dangerous and life
threatening
- Sweat helps with gripping by slightly moistening the palms
Summary!!
cohesion adhesion
- Attraction of force between the - Attraction of force between
water molecules(same) water molecules and non water
- Eg; water drop being a drop is molecules
because of the water molecules - Eg; when a water glass is
sticking together emptied there are still water
droplets left because of the
adhesion force
homeostasis
- Allows survival and
Latent heat of
adaptation of humans by vapourization
reaching an equillibram of all
body systems - Helps us cool down when we
- Eg; sweating helps prevent sweat when our body goes
body from over heating through homeostasis by
conserving of the energy used
for the vapourising liquid
