Plumbing tools and their uses

1. Pipe cutter- Pipe cutter includes the cutting reels, moving
reels base, screw, and adjusting handles. Moving reels base is
adjusted as per pipe size with the help of adjusting screwed 18
handle. The pipe was cut by a rotating cutter surrounding it.
3. Pipe wrench- is a fitting plumbing
tool that is used to loosening or
tightening the connections of pipes,
joints, nuts, etc. It is also used to hold
the pipe and turn around it for
tightening or loosening purposes. ‘-

4. Hacksaw- Hacksaw is a cutting

plumbing tool that is used to cut the
plastic pipes, steel hollow roads, steel
thin sheets, angles, etc. Hacksaw
includes the handle, frame, blade and
adjustable wing screw.
19
5.Pipe bending machine- is used to turn or
bend the pipes at various angles as per
requirement. The hand-operated pipe
bending machine is used to bend small
sizes pipes while the hydraulic pipe
bending machine was used to bend large
size pipes. ‘-

6.Water pump pliers or pipe pliers- is one

of the most essential home plumbing tools
that is used to cut pipes, wires, tightening
or loosening the parts.

20
7.Threading dies- are used to create
threads on pipes to join them with another
one to make a strong joint connection. It
was used to make threads on plastic
pipes as well as steel pipes.
‘-

8. Chain wrench- is holding plumbing

tools that are used to hold and open or
close the large dia pipes. Chain wrench
includes the chain and toott which helps
to hold and rotate the pipes.

21
9.The spanners- are the fitting
plumbing tool that is used to
loosening or tightening the standard
size nuts and bolts.
‘-
10.Plumb Bob- is the most common
tool in construction and house
drainage works. Plumb Bob is used
to check the vertical alignment of
any members or pipes.

22
Plumbing Materials and it’s Uses
1. Copper Pipe
are commonly used in
the construction industry for
residential water supply lines ‘-
and sometimes for drain and
vent lines. Copper pipes can
be manufactured as soft or
rigid copper and they offer
excellent corrosion resistance
and reliable connection.

23
Types of Copper Pipes
1. Type K Copper Pipe- best for water lines and underground
installations.

2. Type L Copper Pipe- best for interior

‘- branch water and
supply lines.

3. Type M Copper Pipe- best for branch plumbing lines.

4. Type Copper DWV Pipes- occationally used for DWV

pipes. 24
‘-

25
2. Plastic Pipes
Is a tubular section, or hollow
cylinder, made of plastic. It is
usually, but not necessarily,
‘-
of circular cross-section,
used mainly to convey
substances which can flow—
liquids and gases (fluids),
slurries, powders and
masses of small solids.
26
Types of Plastic Pipes
1. Solid wall pipe- extruded pipes consisting of one layer of a
homogeneous matrix of thermoplastic material which is ready for use
in a pipeline.

2. Structured wall pipe- are tailor made solutions

‘- of piping systems,
for a variety of applications and in most cases developed in
cooperation with users.

3. Barrier pipe- is used, for example, to provide additional protection

for the contents passing through the pipe (particularly drinking water)
from aggressive chemicals or other pollution when laid in ground
contaminated by previous use. 27
3. Rigid Pipe
Usually made of plain concrete,
vitrified clay, cast iron and other
strong materials, rigid pipes are
‘-
sufficiently strong to withstand
most anticipated loads and have
sufficient strength to support
loads even if no side support is
provided

28
4. PVC (Poly-Vinyl Chloride)
PVC is now the defacto
standard in home waste
line materials. It is a ‘-
strong chemical
resistant pipe that is
somewhat heat resistant
and easy to cut.
29
5. PEX (Cross-linked Polyethylene)

PEX is corrosion resistant,

and unlike copper pipe, it
will not develop pinholes. ‘-
Because PEX is flexible
and uses fewer
connections and fittings, it
is easier and faster to
install.
30
6. Black Steel
Black pipe looks
almost exactly like
galvanized iron pipe, ‘-
except it is darker
and specifically
designed for gas
applications.

31
7. Galvanized Pipe
Galvanized iron pipe was once
a popular method of plumbing
water supply lines in the home,
‘-
but it gradually fails due to
corrosion and rust. For this
reason, it is no longer commonly
used and has been largely
replaced with copper pipe or
PEX plastic pipe.
