Nano Electro Mechanical Systems (NEMS) are tiny devices
that integrate mechanical and electrical components on a
nanoscale level. NEMS typically have sizes ranging from a
few nanometers to a few micrometers and can perform
functions such as sensing, and signal processing.
NEMS technology offers significant advantages
over traditional mechanical systems, including
improved sensitivity, lower power consumption,
and faster response times.
NEMS have a wide range of potential
applications in fields such as healthcare,
environmental monitoring, information
technology, and telecommunications.
NEMS are typically integrate transistor-like
nanoelectronics with mechanical actuators, pumps, or
motors, and may there by form physical, biological, and
chemical sensors. The name derives from typical device
dimensions in the nanometer range, leading to low mass,
high mechanical resonance frequencies, potentially large
quantum mechanical effects such as zero point motion,
and a high surface-to-volume ratio useful for surface-
based sensing mechanisms.
Applications include accelerometers and sensors to
detect chemical substances in the air.
Uses include accelerometers or detectors of chemical
substances in the air. Because of the scale on which
they can function, NEMS is expected to significantly
impact many areas of technology and science and
eventually replace MEMS
