Polynomials are everywhere.

It is found in a roller coaster of an amusement park, the slope of a hill, the curve of a bridge or the continuity of a
mountain range. They play a key role in the study of algebra, in analysis and on the whole many mathematical problems involving them.
So here are 5 polynomial functions in real life
1.Rollercoaster
An example of a polynomial function that represents a basic rollercoaster would be f(x)= -0.000833(x^3 + 12x^2 -580x -1200). The graphs shows two
basic loops that are formed from the function and how it would mirror a ride.

Problem:Fred, Elena, Michael, and Diane enjoy roller Coasters. Whenever a new roller Coaster opens near their town, they try to be among the first
to ride. One Saturday, the four friends decide to ride a new coaster. While waiting in line, Fred notices that part of this coaster resembles the graph
of a polynomial function that they have been studying in their IM3 class.
h(t) = 0.3t^3 – 5t^2 + 21t
Questions:
1.What is the polynomial function by degree called?
2.Find the height of the coaster at t = 0 seconds. Explain why this answer makes sense.
3.Find the height of the coaster 9 seconds after the ride begins. Explain how you found the answer
4.Evaluate h(60). Does this answer make sense? Identify practical (valid real life) domain of the ride for this model. CLEARLY EXPLAIN your reasoning.
Answers:
1. This polynomial is a cubic polynomial
2. h(0) = 0, This value means that the ride starts on the ground
3. h(9) = 2.7 feet the answer is found by substituting 9 for each x in the equation
4. h(60) = 48,060 feet the answer is not reasonable, because it is too high for a roller coaster ride. On the graph, after 10 seconds, ride keeps
increasing in height to infinity, therefore practicel domain is no more than D: 0< x < 12
2. Curve of bridges
Architects use polynomials to design the shape of a bridge like this and to draw the blueprints for it. Engineers use polynomials to calculate the
stress on the bridge's supports to ensure they are strong enough for the intended load.
Problem: 4x^2 − 2x − 4
Questions:
1.What is the polynomial function by degree called?
2. What is the y-intercept?
3. What is the max zeros
Answers:
1.)quartic polynomial
2.)-4
3.)2

3. Curve of a hill
You can know the polynomial function of a hill and turn it into an equation
4x^3 + x^2 - 3x + 4
Answers:
1. Cubic function
2. y-intercept is 4
3.The max zeros is 3
