COMMUNITY

• It is defined as a large number of


individuals ,living together in a defined
geographical area and having common interests,
goals and ways of life.
DEFINITION OF COMMUNITY BY
WHO

• WHO defines community as a social group


determined by geographical boundaries and
/or common values and interests. Its members
knows and interact with each other. It
functions within a particular social structure
and exhibits, and create certain norms, values
and social institutions.
PURPOSE OF COMMUNITY
HEALTH:
1. To determine the nature and extent of disease
and disability in the community.
2. To take suitable measures to
• promote healthful living
• Maintain optimal health
• Prevent disabilities
• Treat illness
OBJECTIVES OF COMMUNITY
HEALTH:
• Objectives of Community Health:
• Increasing average span of human life .
• Decreasing IMR and MMR
• Decreasing the morbidity and mortality rate .
• Increasing the physical, mental and social wellbeing
of individuals Provide total health care to improve
quality of life. (Basavanthappa 1998)

HEALTH NURSING
The science and art of preventing disease,
prolonging life and promoting physical and
mental health and efficiency through organized
community efforts for,
• the sanitation of the environment
• the organization of medical and nursing services for
the early diagnosis, prompt treatment and prevention
of disease.

Is the practice of promoting and protecting


the Health of individual ,family and
community using knowledge from nursing
social and public health sciences.

• According to American Nurses association:
“Synthesis of Nursing and public health practice
applied to promoting and preserving the health of
population ,Health promotion health maintenance
health education, and coordination to the
management of health care of individual, family
and community. (ANA, 1980).
CHARACTERISTICS OF COMMUNITY
HEALTH NURSING

1. It has “we” feeling.


2. It has definite locality.
3. Combine specialize knowledge of public
health with nursing practice
4. Has a population oriented focus.
5. Emphasize wellness rather then disease or
illness
6. Involve interdisciplinary collaboration that is
team work with other professionals
PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY
HEALTH NURSING

• Health services should be realistic in terms of available resources.


• Professional relationship with etiquette and dignity
• Community participation is the integral part of the community
health services.
• Individual and family members participation in decision making.
• Health services must be continuous.
• Proper records and reports are essential.
• Proper evaluation of health services
• Health services must be available to all without any difference.
CHALLENGES FOR

NURSING

• Must work to promote the health of population for planning


intervention.
• New causes of morbidity and mortality be considered.
• Encourage to focus on underserved population.
• Need for education in community health nursing.
FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNITY
HEALTH NURSING
• The basic functions of community might be summarized in the following
order :
• To determine the use of space for living and other purposes.
• To make available that means of production and distribution of necessary
goods and services.
• To protect and conserve the health, life, resources and property of
individuals.
• To transmit information, ideas , beliefs.
• To provide opportunities for interaction between individuals and groups.
• Socialization and education for its members.
• Linkage with social system outside the community for meeting needs of its
members.
HEALTH

• WHO defines health as a “state of


complete physical ,mental, social and
spiritual well being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity but also the
ability to lead a socially and economically
productive life”.
DISEASE

• Disease is a particular abnormal condition that affecting


structure and function of body.
ILLNESS

Illness is phenomena in which one or more


natural function of the body are so disturbed
that the affected individual can not meet
the natural requirement of every day of life
• There are two types of illness
• Acute illness: If the disturbance is severe and duration is short is called acute
illness

• Chronic Illness: if the illness continues for a long duration without


disability is called chronic illness.
WELLNESS

• A dynamic state of health in which an individual


progresses toward high level of functioning achieving
an optimum balance between internal and external
environments
• A state of wellbeing to which the individual and family
strive for the quality of life.
PHILOSOPHY OF COMMUNITY
HEALTH NURSING

• Community health nursing believes that it works towards


attaining, maintaining or regaining the high level of wellness by
preventing from diseases and promoting health principals.
• Philosophy of individuals self respect.
• CHN believes that every individual have a need of health
learning.
• CHN believes every member of community has an equal right to
get health care in equal amount, irrespective of their gender, age,
caste, group, color, area, social status and religion.
• CHN believes that advancement in science and technology has a
big positive role in promotion of health and prolonging life.

• CHN believes that prevention from diseases and promotion


of health is better than cure.
• CHN believes that the provisions of specialists nursing care
must respond to the expressed needs of individuals and
should follow an inter professional and multi agency
approach.
• CHN believes that health care should be provided in such a
way to develop the quality of life that community feels and
observes it.
• Philosophy of freedom.
