Character sketch
 Character Sketch of Charley
 Charlie was a nervous person. His hobby was collecting
stamps. He was a young man, yet he was afraid to live in
the violent society. He desired to visit a peaceful and
idyllic place. Charley is an optimist who constantly sees
the positive aspects of situations. He regularly expresses
his desire to escape the ordinary reality of his daily
existence and is also a dreamer. His fascination with time
travel has led him to think that the Third Level of Grand
Central Station serves as a gateway to the past. Charley is
an adventurous person who welcomes a challenge. Sam is
reluctant at first, but Charley persuades him to go with
him to explore the Third Level.

 Character Sketch of Louisa

 Louisa is a practical, level-headed, and rational person.

Louisa helps her husband stay grounded by reminding
him of his responsibilities in the outside world. She is
also portrayed as being a loving and understanding wife to
her anxious husband. Louisa first has doubts about the
Third Level and believes it is just a figment of her
husband’s imagination. She hears him out, makes an
effort to comprehend his anxieties, and implores him to
get help from a professional. She is kind to him and
encourages him as he makes baby strides towards
recovery.
 Character Sketch of Sam

 Sam was a psychiatrist. He was Charley’s

friend as well. Sam is a practical and sensible
individual who enjoys his life. He retains his
composure and is resistant to Charley’s
imaginative ideas. However, out of curiosity
and a desire to disprove Charley, Sam
ultimately decides to go with him.

He spoke with several psychic patients every

day, who shared their problems and fears
with him. Sam’s life has become burdened as
a result of this. He also began looking for a
sojourn. After hearing about the suffering of
those with mental illnesses, he yearned to
leave the miserable life he had come to lead.
Sam prevents himself from enjoying the full
potential of life by his reluctance to take
chances and investigate new ideas.
Introduction:

 Third Level Summary – It is a story about a 31-year-old man

name, Charlie. Besides, this is a psychological story that refers
to the subway at the grand central railway station which takes
passengers to Galesburg. In addition, this subway becomes the
interconnection between the narrator’s harsh reality and
fantasy. Moreover, the third level was a way of escape for
Charley. As life in the modern world is full of uncertainties
worries and stress, it takes Charley to a different world that his
friend also calls, “a walking dream wish fulfilment.” Further,
the story is about Charley’s tendency to escape from the world.
Most importantly, the third level starts because of Sam’s letter
written on 18th July 1984. This story shows the connection
between time and space.
 In the story "The Third Level" by Jack Finney, the concept of
time travel comes alive through the experiences of the
protagonist, Charley. The third level refers to a form of
transportation that allows Charley to escape his present reality
and explore a bygone era.
 1. Introduction to Time Travel: The story begins with Charley
taking a break from his stressful life in the present. He
stumbles upon a post office in Grand Central Station, New
York, where he discovers a new level that had previously gone
unnoticed. This introduction piques his curiosity about the
existence of time travel.
 2. The Third Level as a Refuge: Charley soon realizes that the
third level takes him back to the year 1894. The atmosphere,
people, and architecture all reflect the time period accurately.
He finds solace in this refuge and uses it as an escape from the
pressures of his modern life.
 3. Interaction with Historical Figures: As Charley explores the
third level, he encounters several historical figures from
literature and history, such as Sherlock Holmes, Robinson
Crusoe, President McKinley, and even his own grandfather.
These encounters emphasize the reality of time travel as
Charley interacts with characters from different eras.
 4. Blurring of the Boundaries: As Charley spends more time in
the third level, the boundaries between the past and present
begin to blur. He experiences moments when he is unable to
distinguish between the two realities, suggesting that time
travel has become an integral part of his life.
 5. Insights into the Past: While in the third level, Charley
gains profound insights into the past and realizes the stark
differences between the 1894 era and his present-day world.
He learns about the simplicity, kindness, and lack of
technology in the past, which make him question the values
and advancements of his own time.
 6. Challenges and Consequences: As Charley becomes more
engrossed in the third level, he faces challenges in reconciling
his time travel experiences with reality. He even considers
permanently leaving his present-day life behind to live in the
past. However, he ultimately decides against it, realizing that
he could lose touch with reality and the people he cares about.
 The Revelation: In the end, Charley's experiences in the third level
are revealed to be a product of his imagination. The third level was
merely an escape mechanism created by his mind to cope with the
stress and pressures of everyday life. Despite this revelation, the
story leaves a lingering sense of possibility surrounding the
existence of time travel, as Charley's vivid imagination brings the
concept to life.
 Through Charley's journey in "The Third Level," time travel
becomes alive in the reader's imagination. The story merges both the
fantastical and the relatable, sparking a sense of wonder and
contemplation about the possibilities of escaping reality and
exploring different time periods.

So is it even possible to go back

in time?
Answering this question requires understanding how time
actually works – something physicists are far from certain
about. So far, what we can say with confidence is that
travelling into the future is achievable, but travelling into the
past is either wildly difficult or absolutely impossible .
Albert Einstein's theories
of relativity

 Let's start with Albert Einstein's theories of relativity, which

set out a description of space, time, mass and gravity. A key
outcome of relativity is that the flow of time isn't constant.
Time can speed up or slow down, depending on the
circumstances.
 For example, time passes more slowly if you travel at speed,
though you need to start approaching the speed of light for the
effect to be significant. This gives rise to the twin paradox, in
which one of two identical twins becomes an astronaut and
whizzes around in space at close to the speed of light, while
the other stays on Earth. The astronaut will age more slowly
than their Earthbound twin. "If you travel and come back, you
are really younger than the twin brother," says Vlatko Vedral,
a quantum physicist at the University of Oxford, in the UK.
Twins Scott and Mark Kelly did this for real when
Scott spent months in space, albeit not at speeds close to that
of light.
 Similarly, time passes more slowly for you if you are in an
intense gravitational field, such as a black hole. "Your head is
ageing quicker than your feet, because Earth's gravity is
stronger at your feet," says Osborne.
Conclusion

 Concluding all the possible outcome of time travel

with respect to the chapter we can say that regardless
of what the past was or what we believe the future will
bring, we must stay in the present.
 Explanation:
 In this story, Charley lives in an imaginary world and
believes that the past looked different from the world
that he lives in now. He goes around the city looking
for remnants of the past and spends his time trying to
hide away from the sufferings of the modern world.
 The conclusion that can be drawn from this story is
that the modern world is full of insecurities, stress and
violence. In these conditions, people feel caged and
restricted. To escape from this grim reality, people like
Charley live in the imaginary world trying to run away
from reality.
 The realisation that can be drawn from the "Third
Level" is that the past and the future are illusions and
one must live in the real world and face the situations
that are thrown at you.
